Mallory picked as Brandon's new fire chief

BRANDON — There has been a surprise changing of the guard at the Lake Dunmore Hose Company in Brandon, as Eric Mallory was elected Brandon fire chief, replacing longtime Chief Bob Kilpeck.

The vote took place at the fire department’s April 25 bi-annual meeting. Mallory was nominated from the floor and voted in by the majority.

“I’m flattered by it, and I’ll give it my best,” Mallory said.

Unitarians call Rev. Barnaby Feder

MIDDLEBURY — The Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Middlebury voted on Sunday, April 22, to call as its next settled minister the Rev. Barnaby J. Feder of Montclair, N.J. Feder succeeds the congregation’s interim minister, the Rev. Emily Melcher, and will begin work on Aug. 1, 2012.

New zoning could effect look of Vergennes

VERGENNES — At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, Vergennes officials and residents will take what could be one of the final steps on what has been close to a five-year journey.

Then, in the city fire station’s basement meeting room, aldermen will convene a public hearing on new zoning regulations proposed by the Vergennes Planning Commission. A copy of the laws is posted at vergennes.org.

Planners have been working on those zoning laws since Vergennes adopted its award-winning city plan in October 2009.

UPDATED: Police find body of missing Monkton hiker

MONKTON — An intensive search through the night for a Monkton man reported missing Thursday evening ended tragically early Friday morning when authorities found the man dead near a swamp.

Vermont State Police said the circumstances around the death of Ralph Meader, 65, did not appear to be suspicious, though their investigation was continuing.

Police said Meader was dropped off for a nature walk on the east side of Bristol Road near Church Street in Monkton on Thursday, May 3, and was expected back by 5:15 p.m.

Bristol rallies behind Gorton

BRISTOL — Bristol Elementary sixth-grader Jacob Gorton, son of Jackie and Katie Gorton, last month was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, the cash-strapped family has received an overwhelming wave of community support.

Family friends are organizing fundraisers, have established a fund to help pay for Gorton’s treatments, and are holding a meeting for anyone interested in supporting Jacob and his family. The meeting is next Tuesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Bristol Elementary School library at 6:30 p.m.

Nine departments battle Rt. 7 blaze

FERRISBURGH — A Ferrisburgh fire that started just before 11 o’clock on Sunday night burned to the ground the rear of a rambling Route 7 structure and badly damaged the rest of it. The conflagration destroyed many valuable tractors, cars and equipment stored there, and it is forcing a marine sales and service business renting a storefront — Eriksen’s Crow’s Nest Marina — to relocate.

Bidding adieu to a 'giant'

MIDDLEBURY — They arrived from all corners of the state by the hundreds on Monday, bathing Middlebury College’s white marble Mead Chapel in a sea of green, blue and black.

From constables to reformed lawbreakers to the governor of the state of Vermont, they filled the chapel to honor a man who many described as a “giant” in law enforcement — Addison County Sheriff James Coons, who died on April 16 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 59.

VUHS honored for innovative plan for earning diplomas

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School was recognized last week for its ongoing efforts to establish Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements (PBGR) as the norm for its students to receive their degrees.

VUHS and its middle school have been inducted into Vermont’s “League of Innovative Schools,” according to the state Department of Education.

Private schools work to keep numbers up

ADDISON COUNTY — While some Addison County school districts are considering merging resources and governance in the face of declining enrollment, some of the area’s independent, private schools are also having to adjust their budgets and business plans to remain successful.

A survey of six of the county’s independent schools revealed that while some remain at full capacity, others are seeing student numbers drop and are compensating by either trimming staff and/or grade levels, or are adding new offerings to woo prospective families.
