Quick thinking saves dog

NORTH BENNINGTON — What started as a typically laid back Father’s Day outing for Scott Atherton and his family on Sunday ended in a shocking series of events. But quick work from the Middlebury resident meant it did end not in tragedy.

Atherton nearly lost his corgi dog, Aaron, to a deadly whirlpool in the Walloomsac River formed by a hidden concrete slab forming a hole within the waters.

Ferrisburgh selectboard reviews safe school route proposals

FERRISBURGH — Recom­men­dations for improvements intended to make it safer for children near Ferrisburgh Central School to walk to school earned mixed reviews from the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday.

Most selectboard members said they liked at least some of the proposals in a report developed by a town Safe Route to Schools (SRTS) committee with help from the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s SRTS Resource Center.

Ferrisburgh students to tap maple trees

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen on Tuesday agreed to let supervised Ferrisburgh Central School students tap maple trees on the town-owned Union Meeting Hall property on Route 7 — with one provision.

The proposal came from FCS parent Nick Patch, who has a portable maple sugar house. Patch sought the board’s permission to tap the maples, which are about 400 yards from the school across the state highway.

Ayer, Bray and Wagner file; GOP takes pass on Senate

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore voters will elect at least one new state senator this November, and that person will either be a Democrat or an independent candidate.

A records check at the Addison County Courthouse revealed that two major party candidates had filed papers by the June 14 deadline to run for the state Senate this November. Those filing at the courthouse were incumbent Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, and fellow Democrat Christopher Bray of New Haven.

Many House incumbents to run uncontested in November

ADDISON COUNTY — Barring write-in campaigns before the state’s Aug. 28 primary election, Addison County will see no primary contests for seats in the Vermont House of Representatives and only three contested House elections in November.

Democratic incumbents in the Addison-1 Middlebury district — Betty Nuovo and Paul Ralston — and the Addison-4 district representing Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro — Dave Sharpe and Mike Fisher — will run unopposed.

ANeSU teachers win pay raises in new contract

ADDISON COUNTY — Head negotiators for Addison Northeast Supervisory Union teacher contract talks said they have agreed to a four-year contract that features pay increases.

After ANeSU teachers worked for almost two years without a collective bargaining agreement, the ANeSU board and teachers’ union negotiators struck a deal last Monday, June 11.

Perine marks anniversary with donation

MIDDLEBURY — With a donation of more than $1,000 to the Tot Time program with the Middlebury Recreation Department, National Bank of Middlebury President Ken Perine put the shoe on the other foot by giving to others on the 25th anniversary of his date of hire at the bank.

Leicester blaze destroys home, displaces family

LEICESTER — A June 12 blaze on Lake Dunmore Road in Leicester destroyed a home and displaced four people.

Eric Mallory, chief of the Brandon Volunteer Fire Department, said the mobile home, located on a rented lot near Cove Point, was occupied at the time by Helen Corbett, another adult female whose name he did not know, an eight-year-old and a ten-year-old.

Mallory reported Corbett said she put clothing in the clothes dryer and shortly afterward saw sparks.
