Middlebury College students to host family literacy programs

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s Page One Literacy program will host two family events this fall.

First is a “Robert Frost Walk” in Ripton on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 1-3 p.m. Families are invited to join Middlebury College students for a poetry walk on the Robert Frost Trail. The 1.2-mile loop offers poetry stops along with way. There will be snacks and games as well.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Kirk Alumni Center at Middlebury College. Visit sites.middlebury.edu/page1/ if the weather is questionable.

Airport noise to be measured; pilots discuss runway plan

MIDDLEBURY — A consultant has placed five noise monitors at the Middlebury State Airport to give Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) aviation officials an idea of what neighbors are currently hearing near the site and how that sound level might change following a proposed 700-foot extension of the airport runway.

Meanwhile, some of pilots who regularly use the Middlebury airport are starting to weigh in on the proposed $3.5 million project, saying that a runway extension will be key in assuring safer landings and takeoffs.

Forest service approves glade skiing plans

ORWELL — Drive the back roads of Addison County right now, and you’ll see acres and acres of plowed corn fields, giant clods of Addison County clay upturned, waiting for the cold and snow to break them into something more manageable, so that springtime harrowing can convert them into something like a seed bed fit for next year’s corn.

Couple breathes new life into landmark city building

VERGENNES — In December of 2012 Boulder, Colo., couple Bob Feuerstein and Lillian Kennedy bought Vergennes landmark Kennedy Brothers Marketplace from members of Kennedy’s family.

Before the deal, Kennedy and Feuerstein had partial ownership of the 41,724-square-foot Main Street building that consists of a larger brick wing with a wooden-frame white addition.

Cornwall sells historic Bingham Street schoolhouse

CORNWALL — Cornwall’s historic one-room schoolhouse at 114 South Bingham St. is being sold to someone who has become quite familiar with the building during the past several years.

Addison Central Supervisory Union Business Manager David Boucher confirmed on Thursday that the former school building has been sold to Allison Quinttus — who happens to reside next to the building.

“She respects the property, and I know she understands the historic significance of the building,” Boucher said.

MUHS students earn top musician honors

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School musicians Sophie Saunders, flute, and Haven Tate, bass trombone, have been selected to perform with the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) Honors Concert Band in Nashville, Tenn., in late October. Only four students from Vermont were selected for this honor.

Saunders and Tate will rehearse for three days with other top students from around the United States, culminating in a performance on stage at the Grand Ol’ Opry.

Ferrisburgh wildlife program on tap for Oct. 21

FERRISBURGH — Vermont’s Department of Fish & Wildlife Conservation Planning Biologist Jens Hilke will present “Where the Wild Things Are,” a program and conversation about local wildlife, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Ferrisburgh Community Center and Town Offices.

The event includes a historical look at the region and discussion of who lives here, current issues, and what can be done to protect vital habitat.

Starksboro 17-year-old injured when car strikes moose

BOLTON — A young woman from Starksboro who was a passenger in a car that hit a moose on Tuesday evening was badly injured; the driver was killed.

Vermont State Police report that a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 22-year-old Brandon Preedom of Waterbury struck an 800-pound bull moose at a little after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Preedom succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
