MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Development Review Board (DRB) will spend the next few weeks discussing separate proposals seeking to bring a new mattress store, automotive reconditioning building and golf recreation facility to town.

The DRB on Monday, Jan. 23, will also resume its review of Vermont Hard Cider’s proposal to build a new, 87,005-square-foot plant on Exchange Street. Middlebury Town Planner Fred Dunnington said the board has already given the major project conceptual approval.

MONKTON — In the wake of a burglary at Monkton Central School last week, school staff and students are putting the school back together and returning to normal.

MIDDLEBURY — When one thinks of a French wine, perhaps Bordeaux or Beaujolais comes to mind.

That’s the concept of “terroir” at play: the “taste of place” that is so central to French wines. And the concept is one that Scott Burns, a professor of geology at Portland State University, is extending to home turf with his studies of how soil type affects wine in his home state of Oregon.

FERRISBURGH — From a distance, the vertical green panels revolving in a back field at Boundbrook Farm in Ferrisburgh look more like an art installation than a piece of farm equipment.

But don’t be deceived: Come spring, the unconventional windmill will pump as many as 150 gallons of water a minute into farmer Erik Andrus’s 5-acre rice paddy, day in and day out.

MIDDLEBURY — Just before the Jan. 12 second anniversary of Haiti’s devastating earthquake, three local moms early this month delivered more than 700 pairs of shoes collected in Addison County to needy children on the Caribbean island.

“There is an incredible culture of humility that happens when you take a trip like this because we come from a place of such excess by comparison,” said Andrea Ward, a New Haven resident, who made the Jan. 4-8 relief trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with Maria Graham and Kelly Hickey.
