Singers found their voices in women's anthem

MIDDLEBURY — Around 100 singers gathered at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society last Saturday, Feb. 18, to learn and sing the march “anthem” that went viral at the Jan. 21 Women’s March in Washington, D.C.

The sanctuary was filled — mostly with women, but happily some men and youth took part, as well.

Leading Artificial Intelligence expert to speak on 'intelligent machines'

MIDDLEBURY—For centuries, people have imagined smart machines inhabiting the earth in fictional stories. As these “intelligent” machines cross over from the realm of fiction into reality, the impact of this technology on people, communities, and society at large takes on new urgency. 

Those thorny issues will be the focus of a public lecture, “Intelligent Systems: Design and Ethical Challenges,” by Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar Barbara Grosz on Monday, Feb. 27, at 4:30 p.m. in McCardell Bicentennial Hall, room 216.

Baked Potato Bar opens sixth year as fundraiser

CORNWALL Locals looking for a way to break their late-winter cabin fever are invited to the sixth annual Baked Potato Bar at the Cornwall Congregational Church, set for Friday, March 3, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The cost is $5 per potato, with all proceeds to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Addison County. New this year will be sweet potatoes, in addition to the usual baked spuds.

Vail Resorts buys Stowe Mountain Resort

Lake Champlain Basin Program seeks volunteers to protect lake from invasive species

GRAND ISLE — The Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) is hiring as many as ten boat launch stewards to work at New York and Vermont public boat launch access areas during the Program’s 11th season. The stewards help to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species by identifying high-risk boats for courtesy inspection and providing information about invasive species spread prevention.

Porter Medical Center directors endorse affiliation with UVM Health Network; one hurdle left

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Medical Center (PMC) and University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) boards on Thursday voted unanimously to sign an affiliation agreement, a move that would result in reduced independence for Addison County’s hospital but net it greater financial stability, some key capital improvements and a more diverse menu of health care services for local patients.

Thursday’s board votes were a monumental step, but the affiliation move still hinges on some changes to Porter’s organizational bylaws.

Vergennes Opera House thriving in 20th year of revival

VERGENNES — On Feb. 14 the Vergennes City Council heard an upbeat report from Friends of the Vergennes Opera House President Gerianne Smart about the financial and artistic health of the historic theater. The VOH has several big shows lined up for the coming months and is planning now for its 20th season since reopening in 1997 upstairs in the 120-year-old Vergennes City Hall.

“It’s been a wonderful 20 years, I’ve got to say,” Smart told the council.
