Orwell vote stops unification in Addison-Rutland district

ORWELL — Orwell residents on Tuesday voted 211 to 121 against joining five Rutland County communities in forming a “Slate Valley Unified Union School District” that would have been governed by a single board presiding over a global education budget for all of the schools in the new union.

“A pretty strong message was sent,” Orwell’s Alyson Eastman, chairwoman of the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union’s Act 46 Study Committee, said on Wednesday of her community’s vote on the issue.

Vermont Green Line: We'll pay Ferrisburgh fees

FERRISBURGH — In emails this week to the Independent, the companies proposing the $650 million Vermont Green Line said they would pay the town of Ferrisburgh’s legal fees to review a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the companies and town for compensation for allowing work in town rights of way.

The emails said compensation — pegged at $40,000 for these preliminary costs alone — could also go toward the town’s other expenses researching the project.

'Hansel and Gretel' make their way to Addison County

ROCHESTER — Bald Mountain Theater, based in Rochester, will embark on its first region-wide tour this spring, presenting an original adaptation of the folk classic “Hansel and Gretel.”

In Addison County, the show will run in Vergennes on Sunday, April 17, at 1 and 4 p.m. at the Vergennes Opera House; in Middlebury on Saturday, April 23, at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Middlebury Union High School auditorium; and in Bristol on Sunday, May 1, at 1 and 4 p.m. at Holley Hall.

Two key employees buy Middlebury bike shop

MIDDLEBURY — New owners who officially took the helm of Middlebury’s only bike shop, The Bike Center, say Addison County cyclists will continue to be able to choose from a full menu of bike services and get advice on riding in the area this season.

The one new thing cyclists will encounter is a new sign: They are changing the shop’s name to Frog Hollow Bikes.

Local cyclists and Bike Center employees Chas Lyons and Carl Robinson just recently bought the shop on Main Street from longtime owner David Tier.

New Haven board approves Vermont Green Line

NEW HAVEN — After a four-hour emergency meeting Tuesday night, the New Haven selectboard ratified a set of terms that could pave the way for building a big electric power converter station in town and pour millions of dollars into municipal coffers.

“We’re 99.5 percent there, maybe 99.9 percent there,” said Selectman Steve Dupoise, a member of the team negotiating with developers of the Vermont Green Line (VGL), which would bring wind and hydro power from upstate New York into the New England grid at the VELCO substation in New Haven.

Bristol-area teachers and schools reach contract accord

BRISTOL — Teachers in the Bristol-area school district and school officials have reached a tentative contract agreement.

The contract between the Addison Northeast Education Association (teachers union) and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union covers the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years, Interim Superintendent Armando Vilaseca said on Tuesday.

State OKs ‘biogas’ pipeline in Salisbury

SALISBURY — The Vermont Public Service Board on Friday authorized the construction and operation of a pipeline to send methane gas, derived from organic waste, from the Goodrich family farm on Shard Villa Road in Salisbury to Middlebury College. The project is being spearheaded by a company called Lincoln Renewable Natural Gas, or Lincoln RNG.

Jackie Deering wins national teacher award

MIDDLEBURY — The Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation (TLLCCF) has announced that Jackie Deering of Otter Creek Child Center in Middlebury has been selected to receive the 2016 Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children’s Tylenol National Child Care Teacher Award. Deering was selected from a pool of applicants nationwide. She will receive an award of $1,000 on Saturday, April 16, in Philadelphia.

Rail bridges' impact leads to talk of lawsuit

MIDDLEBURY — A group of downtown Middlebury property owners has given municipal and state transportation officials until the end of this month to produce more environmental and safety-related information about the upcoming replacement of the Main Street and Merchants Row railroad bridges, or they will take legal action.

That request is contained in an April 11 letter from local attorney Peter Langrock to the Middlebury selectboard.
