Mary Johnson honored with Sally Fox Award

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation on June 2 awarded Mary Johnson Children’s Center the Sally Fox Award. The award is given annually to a Vermont nonprofit organization that provides direct services of exceptional merit to children ages birth through 18.

Eastview hires Robertson as new marketing director

MIDDLEBURY — With over 16 years in sales and marketing, and 10 of them focused in senior health, Jenni Robertson has joined EastView at Middlebury as the director of sales and marketing. She relocated to Addison County last fall from Florida, and started at EastView in February.

OV grads asked to pause and reflect

BRANDON — Close to 100 young women and men and their families and friends could not have been faulted for being in a bit of a hurry this past Saturday morning to get out of the Otter Valley Union High School gym.

The 95 who were receiving their diplomas that day, 24 of whom were National Honor Society members, surely wanted to move on to the next stage of their lives.

Mount Abe graduates look back, move forward

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School on Saturday graduated 110 seniors into a world in which they will experience a variety of emotions, including jubilation, trepidation, exultation and consternation. Commencement speaker Ken Marcelle added one more to the list: fear. But he urged the newly minted graduates to face that emotion head-on and defeat it.

MUHS grads urged to embrace community

MIDDLEBURY — Amid smiles, hugs, bouquets, thunderous cheers and applause from family and well-wishers, and the familiar strains of Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” the 146 members of the Middlebury Union High School class of 2016 officially received their high school diplomas on Saturday.

The commencement ceremony at the Memorial Sports Center also featured wise words from top administrators, plus three insightful and humor-laced speeches from peers, before the newly minted graduates were launched into the world.

Bristol residents want safer walk to creemee stand

BRISTOL — Getting creemees at the Village Creeme Stand is almost synonymous with summer in Bristol.

But crossing busy West Street to get to that Dreamy Creeme cookie sandwich or classic kiddie-size vanilla-and-chocolate-twist cone with rainbow sprinkles has become a concern for many, given that the destination is among Bristol’s top summer kid magnets.

“The town is working with creemee stand owner Tom Wallace to find a solution that works,” said Town Administrator Therese Kirby.

A lot of peaks and some valleys.

And while she retired last week from a lengthy teaching career at Mary Hogan Elementary School, she’s not done climbing.

Pocock Rocks returning to Bristol this weekend

BRISTOL — Join friends old and new in downtown Bristol this Saturday as Main Street is turned into a showcase for Vermont’s funkiest tunes, food, drinks and fun at the seventh Pocock Rocks Music Festival and Street Fair.

After a hiatus last year, Pocock Rocks is back from 3 to 8 p.m. and open to all who want to kick off the summer with style and a little groove. Local bands will be rocking all day with back-to-back performances on two stages at either end of the street.

Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake closed for herbicide treatment

SALISBURY / LEICESTER — There will be no swimming at Branbury State Park, or anywhere on Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake, this Wednesday and Thursday because a herbicide will be pumped into the water to kill invasive aquatic plants.

The Lake Dunmore Fern Lake Association is treating the two bodies of water with herbicides called Renovate OTF and Renovate 3 (active ingredient triclopyr) to help get rid of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum, EWM). The application of the herbicide is slated for Wednesday.
