September 2016 chronology

During the first week of September, new regulations regarding solar siting and screening took effect. Among other requirements, the regulations demanded that new solar arrays “blend into the surrounding” area and mitigate “adverse aesthetic impacts.”

October 2016 chronology

The summer’s hot and dry weather affected the 2016 apple crop. Orchardists reported in October they had beautiful apples with plenty of flavor, but that the apples were smaller and less plentiful — the crop size was down by about a third. That sunshine did lead to plentiful flowers, however, and a bumper honey crop for local beekeepers.

The drought also affected the Fort Ticonderoga Ferry, based in Shoreham, which closed operations early because of the low water level in Lake Champlain. The ferry began to scrape the bottom of the lake, its owners said.

November 2016 chronology

November brought the news that opposition to VTrans’ $40 million, four-year plan to replace Middlebury’s downtown rail bridges took a new step — a request filed with VTrans by Bristol lawyer Jim Dumont on behalf of downtown property and business owners arguing that the project does not need to follow a 21-foot clearance standard over the tracks that is adding considerable time and cost to the work. Dumont argued the project had been unfairly exempted from environmental and historic preservation review and he raised the prospect of legal action.

As December arrived, Vermont State Police announced the second new commander and third overall this year for the New Haven Barracks. Lt. Jeff Danoski, 47, took over for Lt. Chuck Cacciatore, who took a position with VSP in Waterbury. In August, Cacciatore had in turn replaced Lt. Michael Manley, who was promoted. Book ’em, Danoski.

Pilot dies in crash near Middlebury Airport

MIDDLEBURY—At 11:47 a.m. on Friday, a plane crashed at 45 Schoolhouse Hill Road in Middlebury, near the Middlebury Airport, according to Middlebury Police Chief Thomas Hanley. WCAX reports that pilot, the plane's only occupant, has died. 

The aircraft broke up on impact, which resulted in a fire on the aircraft and a nearby outbuilding on the property. Middlebury regional Emergency Medical Service, the Middlebury Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene.

Tri-Town boil-water order ended

BRIDPORT — Tri-Town Water District officials on Friday morning lifted the boil-water order that had been in effect since Monday afternoon.

That action was taken after Tri-Town water passed qualtiy tests on Tuesday and Wednesday. State officials, who ordered the boil order on Monday and reviewed the tests on Thursday, gave Tri-Town the go-ahead to end the boil order on Friday.

The boil order, which followed two water main breaks, had applied to Tri-Town customers' drinking and cooking water in Addison, Bridport and Shoreham.

Tri-Town has a very, very bad day

ADDISON — After a series of incidents between this past Thursday and Monday that included two water main breaks and a power outage at the Tri-Town Water District plant, district officials on Monday afternoon asked their customers in Addison, Bridport and Shoreham to begin boiling drinking and cooking water.

The disruption in service Friday affected around 1,600 customers, and some residents reported discolored water coming into their homes during the events.

Shelter sets record for animals served

MIDDLEBURY — Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society, is excited to announce that they have set a record in 2016 with 908 animals served; 253 dogs, 541 cats, and 114 small animals like rabbits, birds, and guinea pigs. Of the 908 animals, 454 were surrendered by their owners, 234 were strays, and 220 were transferred in from high volume shelters outside Vermont. This far surpasses any previous year, as traditionally the shelter sees 600 animals in a given year.

Neighbors question truck depot

FERRISBURGH — The proposed in-town move of Ferrisburgh trucking firm J.A. DeVos and Sons Inc. to Tuppers Crossing drew fire at a Dec. 7 Board of Zoning Adjustment hearing from some area residents, who said it was a poor fit for the neighborhood.

J.A. DeVos and Sons Inc., owned in part by former Ferrisburgh Selectman John DeVos Jr., is planning to move from the north end of town to a 9-acre parcel on Tuppers Crossing, a half-mile road that runs west from Route 7 to Botsford Road about a half-mile north of Vergennes.

City-area educators propose salary hike

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest Teachers’ Association (ANTA) on Monday presented what it believes is a solid starting point in its salary negotiations on behalf of Vergennes-area educators for the next academic year: a 10.95-percent increase.
