Bixby library to celebrate first 100 years

VERGENNES — Back in 1907, Vergennes native William Gove Bixby surprised fellow townspeople in his will by leaving much of his estate — the bulk of which he inherited from his sister — for the purpose of building a new public library in his hometown.

Five years later, workers finished building the Bixby Free Memorial Library, and 100 years after that — on Oct. 13, a week from Saturday, to be precise — the Vergennes institution named after Bixby will hold a party to celebrate its 100th birthday.

Firm aiming to make solar power a bargain

MIDDLEBURY — A new Waterbury Center-based company is trying to bring the promise of solar-powered electric generation to Addison County at a price that Vermonters can afford.

A new Waterbury Center-based company called Suncommon announced on Tuesday that it will soon begin installing solar electric systems on Addison County homes with no up-front cost and for monthly rates that can be less than what the customers are paying for conventional electricity.

McGarry takes pulpit at St. Stephen's

MIDDLEBURY — The Rev. Susan McGarry had been looking for a opportunity to move to Vermont after having spent more than three decades involved in the ministry and academics in the Midwest.

She has now found that opportunity at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in downtown Middlebury, where she officially began her duties in late August.

Ladies lunch to raise funds for women-centered charities

CORNWALL — Each month, a growing group of women in Addison County get together for lunch.

But not just any lunch. The meals are hosted by the first Vermont chapter of Dining for Women, a national charity that raises money for women’s groups around the world.

Marion Leonard, a kindergarten teacher at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury, and Mary Gill, a school nurse there, initiated Addison County’s chapter. The group has been meeting monthly since April, and is growing fast.

Former county prosecutor charged

MIDDLEBURY — A former prosecutor with the Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office pleaded innocent on Tuesday in Chittenden County Criminal Court to charges of gross negligent operation of a motor vehicle and reckless endangerment. The charges stemmed from a Sept. 8 incident in which she allegedly drove up Middlebury’s Seminary Street for around 200 feet while her 8-year-old daughter was holding onto and running alongside the vehicle.

Urn holding infant's ashes among rash of Monkton thefts

MONKTON — Vermont State Police have responded to a spate of break-ins in recent days, particularly in the town of Monkton, with the most disturbing case involving the theft Monday of a pewter urn containing the ashes of a family’s deceased infant child.

Original 'Phantom of the Opera' to be screened in Brandon

BRANDON — It was one of cinema’s first real shockers — a movie so frightening that its original audiences would shriek in terror and even faint. It was “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925), the silent horror film starring legendary actor Lon Chaney, and it will be revived with live music on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at Brandon Town Hall and Community Center.

Bixby's silent auction to showcase Johnson's art

VERGENNES — Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes will hold a silent auction of framed prints and watercolors by Addison artist Tom Johnson starting Oct. 6 and running through Oct. 20.

Born Feb. 22, 1922, in Camden, N.Y., Johnson graduated from Middlebury College in 1948. He studied watercolor painting there with Arthur K.D. Healy. He later studied with Xavier Gonzalez on Cape Cod and Dong Kingman at Columbia University and apprenticed in silkscreen printing to Arthur Young at Columbia.

Fisher to talk health care reform in Lincoln

LINCOLN — Rep. Mike Fisher, a Lincoln Democrat, this Wednesday will lead a community discussion on current and national efforts on Health Care Reform and the next steps.

The discussion will take place on Oct. 3 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Library.

Fisher is chairman of the House Health Care Committee and had a hand in crafting heath care reform legislation in Vermont.

The public is invited.

National dairy trends taking toll on local farmers

ADDISON COUNTY — With grain prices sky-high and milk prices dropping, a few family-owned Addison County dairy farms are closing their doors this fall.

Paul Audy of New Haven and John Roberts of Cornwall, both in their early sixties, cited a confluence of forces that prompted each of them to get out of the business they had been in for decades: the increasing financial challenges of running a medium-sized herd, the tumultuous market exacerbated by the dairy pricing regulations and the toll of working long hours for years on end.
