Mary Hogan School ready for 2016-2017 school year

Salisbury Community School bus routes announced

SALISBURY — Salisbury Community School has announced its bus routes for the 2016-2017 school year. The times posted here are approximations, and will depend on road conditions and the number of students riding on a given day. Students should be at the bus stop five minutes before these posted times for the first few days.

Folklife Center to host storytelling workshop on Sept. 9

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center is hosting a daylong workshop, “Storytelling for Social Change,”on Friday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. led by director of education Kathleen Haughey.

Storytelling, oral history and ethnography can be powerful tools for the documentation of voices, memories and histories. They can also be catalysts for activism and social change. This workshop will explore the ethics and techniques of oral history, ethnography and storytelling as activist research methodologies.

Lanphers run Vermont's top dairy farm

HYDE PARK — The Lanphear Family Farm, a 530-cow Holstein dairy in Hyde Park, has been named the 2016 Vermont Dairy Farm of the Year. The award is presented annually by University of Vermont Extension and the Vermont Dairy Industry Association in cooperation with the New England Green Pastures Program to an exemplary Vermont dairy farm.

This farm, owned by Kirk and Katrina Lanphear, was recognized for its well-managed herd, high-quality milk production, sound management practices and strong work ethics.

Police find dog hanging from tree

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are seeking the public’s help in solving a suspected animal cruelty case, involving a dog that was found hung from a tree in a wooded area off Route 125 East on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Police said the dog was a black and white border collie. Police found the animal at around 11 a.m., hanging in what they described as a wooded area off the road.

Work on Bixby Library creates potential for more programs

VERGENNES — Adding a second porch door, higher porch railings and stairs from that porch down toward a rear parking lot might at first not seem like that big a deal for the Bixby Memorial Free Library.

But those simple changes to the porch at the 104-year-old Vergennes landmark’s west end, along with the planned addition of push bars to the library’s front doors, serve a key purpose: They are key fire-safety upgrades that increase the Bixby’s legal capacity from 50 people to 200.

Johnson ready to hit the road

CORNWALL — Stu Johnson recalled his late father’s reaction when he was first elected Cornwall’s road commissioner more than two decades ago.

“He told me, ‘Who would’ve thought all those years in the sandbox would be your on-the-job training,’” Johnson said.

As Johnson spoke he was smiling and removing some of the old toy trucks he had displayed in the no-frills office that had for years served as his home away from home — the Cornwall town garage off South Bingham Street.

Bixby engaging public, eyeing future

VERGENNES — While Bixby Memorial Free Library officials and patrons last week celebrated recent work that allows more people to enter the city landmark at the same time (see related story), the library board members are also amid a months-long process that will help them decide how the Bixby will use its new capacity.

By the end of the year, Bixby officials intend to have in place a new strategic plan that should cover at least the next three years.

Panton partnership to produce energy savings

PANTON — Green Mountain Power and Efficiency Vermont officials will come to Panton on Tuesday morning to announce a community-wide energy transformation project there intended to reduce energy costs for homeowners and businesses, lower their fossil fuel use, and improve their comfort.

According to a GMP press release, the effort “will put Panton at the forefront of energy innovation in Vermont as the first town to know its total energy use, cost and carbon, giving it the ability to track energy and carbon-saving improvements.”

Ferrisburgh's new firetruck outfitted to get the job done

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Volunteer Fire Department last month took delivery of a new pumper fire truck that is making a tremendous difference in how efficiently and safely department firefighters can deal with fires and other incidents, according to Fire Chief Bill Wager.

“It’s a big step forward,” Wager said. “The truck was designed primarily for safety and enhanced service, and our ability to provide more services from the same vehicle.”
