Driver in bike case cited only for DUI, not charged in cyclist's death

MIDDLEBURY — Holly Gonyeau, 36, of Ferrisburgh pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison Superior Court’s Criminal Division in Middlebury to driving under the influence of alcohol during the June 17 accident that claimed the life of a cyclist on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh. Family of the cyclist wonder why she did not face more severe charges that could have included vehicular homicide.

Salisbury church to host Middlebury composer's opus

SALISBURY — Composer Sam Guarnaccia of Middlebury met Celtic spirituality theologian Philip Newell at a retreat in Vermont in 2005. Guarnaccia had been improvising music with a Scottish friend and he found that Newell was writing words that might work with a piece with a flavor of the Celtic countries.

The two decided to collaborate, and Guarnaccia set out to create the music that would accompany Newell’s writing.

Kids in summer program raise chickens, donate the meat to HOPE food shelf

MIDDLEBURY — Despite living in one of the most agriculturally productive counties in the state, one in five Addison County children is food insecure, according to Hunger Free Vermont. The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury has organized dozens of youngsters to help do something about that.

The Career Center this month will provide almost 150 chickens, raised in part by the students, to a local food shelf — laying the groundwork for a community initiative to provide healthy, local protein and produce to the food-insecure of Addison County.

Michel Mahé, chef/owner of area restaurants, dies

FERRISBURGH — Michel Mahé, arguably Addison County’s most prominent chef and successful restaurateur, died on Tuesday. The native of France was 50.

Details of his passing were not available as of Wednesday morning. According to Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel, Vergennes Area Rescue Squad personnel responded to Mahé’s Ferrisburgh home at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

Developers of underwater cable offer Vermont $720 million

LAKE CHAMPLAIN — Developers of a planned 154-mile high-voltage transmission cable that would run beneath Lake Champlain agreed to pay the state $720 million over the project’s expected 40-year life, should it be approved by regulators.

The $1.2 billion, 1,000 megawatt transmission line, known as the New England Clean Power Link, would carry hydroelectric and wind power generated in Canada to metropolitan energy markets in the Northeast.

Local students among Law Cadet Program graduates in Pittsford

MONTPELIER — Eighteen young men and women graduated from The American Legion Robert H. Vincelette Law Cadet Program on Friday, June 26. The graduation ceremony was the conclusion of the weeklong session at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford. Among them were local graduates Haley Boise, sponsored by Vergennes Post 14, and Jerod Felkl, sponsored by Brandon Post 55.

Census shows Vt. population is getting older

MONTPELIER — The U.S. Census Bureau last week reported that the state’s median age crept up by two-tenths of a year between last summer and the year before.

Vermont’s median age was 42.6 in July 2014, up from 42.4 in July 2013. Nationwide, the median age was 37.7, up from 37.6 according to census data.

The Census Bureau released the demographic data this past Thursday along with a report detailing how even though the median age is going up nationwide, Millennials are outnumbering their Baby Boomer parents.

Missing DAR medal returned in ceremony

ADDISON — The lost Daughters of the American Revolution insignia belonging to Eva Grace Goss was presented to the current leadership of the Vermont DAR at a special ceremony at the John Strong Mansion Museum in Addison on July 12. The ceremony was conducted by Purple Hearts Reunited (PHR).
