Perine set to retire as Middlebury bank CEO

MIDDLEBURY — When G. Kenneth Perine joined the National Bank of Middlebury in 1987 as a vice president and residential mortgage lender, he thought he had found his perfect career perch.

“It was all I expected,” Perine said during a recent interview. “I just wanted to work for the hometown bank.”

Eventually the Middlebury native found that he would not only work for it, he would lead it.

Middlebury to host free lunch site

MIDDLEBURY — We’ve all heard the old saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

Well, children and teens (ages 2 through 18) who find themselves in Middlebury this summer will have access to free lunch regardless of their resources, thanks to new household income demographics that allow Addison County’s shire town to finally meet federal guidelines as a summer meal site.

New solar farm slated for New Haven parcel

NEW HAVEN — An array of around 500 solar panels is slated to be erected in New Haven off Town Road this summer. It’s a project whose funding has an interesting twist.

The solar photovoltaic project, which recently received its Certificate of Public Good (CPG) from the Vermont Public Service Board, was facilitated by the Acorn Renewable Energy Co-op in collaboration with Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op, Misty Knoll Farm of New Haven, and Encore Redevelopment of Burlington.

Kilbourne leaving Bridport Central School

BRIDPORT — Bridport Central School Principal Kathleen Kilbourne will be leaving her position this month to take the top administrative post at Castleton Elementary School.

Her recently announced departure will result in the district hiring an interim principal to direct Bridport Central for the coming school year, during which officials will search for a permanent replacement.

Vergennes takes steps to introduce arts walk

VERGENNES — June 19 will mark the first of what organizers hope will become a monthly city promotional mainstay — a Vergennes Arts Walk.

Organized by the Vergennes Partnership and city art galleries Creative Space Gallery and Studio V, and backed by more than a dozen businesses and nonprofits, the Vergennes Arts Walk will offer a variety of visual arts and music and try to duplicate the success of similar events in other Vermont towns.

Vermont lawmakers applaud EPA effort to reduce emissions

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Environmental Protection Agency, under the direction of President Obama, this week proposed new carbon emissions regulations on power plants across the country.

The new rules would mandate plants to reduce their carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030, using 2005 emissions levels as the benchmark. This is the first time the federal government has attempted to regulate carbon emissions. According to EPA estimates, the regulations would target some 600 power plants across the nation.

NEW HAVEN — Many businesses release quarterly newsletters to keep their customers up to date on what’s going on in their industry, but Phoenix Feeds and Nutrition Inc. is upping the ante. The New Haven company, which serves those on the front lines of agriculture, last week introduced a new dairy magazine called Perspectives: Dairy farming in the Northeast.

Vermont's Free Fishing Day set for June 14

VERMONT — Enjoy a free sample of Vermont’s fishing, State Parks and State Historic Sites during the annual Vermont Days weekend celebration on June 14-15.

All Vermont State Park day areas and state-owned historic sites, as well as the Vermont History Museum in Montpelier, will be open at no charge all weekend. Saturday, June 14, is also free fishing day — the one day of the year when residents and non-residents may go fishing without a license in any Vermont State Park.

Espresso bar to share Main Street storefront

MIDDLEBURY — There’s something new brewing at the vacant storefront at 58 Main St. in Middlebury that formerly housed Clementine.

The space will soon become home to an espresso bar to be operated by Burlington-based Cursive Coffee, along with a new business called Boo & Roxy that will be headquarters to local architect and designer Anne Barakat and her husband, Jon Craine, a production designer and art director.
