Memory of Halfway House restaurant still inspires

Posted on August 29, 2016 |
By Charlie Tilford

I read your article about the Halfway House restaurant in Shoreham (Arts+Leisure, Aug. 11), and it brought back an old memory.

About 1958, when I was a seventh-grader, I was out with my dad, Arch Tilford, and his hunting buddies: Theron Wolcott, Larry Oliver and Lee Maiden. This was “road hunting” in a station wagon: taking potshots at crows with 12 gauge shotguns from the moving car or stopping to shoot at a woodchuck with a rifle.

By Gaen Murphree

MountainHealth6512.jpg

BRISTOL — At a time of rapid change in health care throughout the state and nation, Mountain Health Center is thriving.

In just under three years, the Bristol-based doctors’ office has doubled its employees, increased its total patient load by close to 1,000, and doubled the number of office visits it can handle yearly.

Mountain Health’s expansion goes hand in hand with its designation in November 2013 as a Federally Qualified Health Center, or FQHC.

ADDISON COUNTY — The modern world is filled with technological and scientific advancements that make our lives easier, but the way we live now also can present some underlying dangers. We make use of potentially hazardous materials in just about every aspect of modern life. These materials are taken for granted when everything is operating smoothly, but when things go wrong we rely on trained specialists who are able to deal with these extremely dangerous products.

The first line of defense is your local fire department.

Vermont State Police barracks in New Haven gets a new leader

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By John Flowers

LtCacciatore6475.jpg

NEW HAVEN — Vermont State Police Lt. Charles Cacciatore found himself doing something on Monday that he has already done several times during his eventful 25-year career with the department: Gazing upon a stack of boxes that he will soon unpack to put his personal touch on a barren office.

And in this case, the nomadic state police administrator is preparing to settle in Addison County for a second time, as he assumes command of the VSP’s New Haven barracks. Cacciatore previously served in this county as a sergeant from 2004 to the start of 2007.

Rainy weather takes toll on 2016 Field Days attendence

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

NEW HAVEN — Addison County Fair and Field Days attendance dropped this year from typical numbers, and even further from 2015, which was a banner year.

About 27,000 people paid their way into the New Haven fairgrounds between Aug. 9 and 13, according to the Field Days business manager, about 10,000 fewer than 2015.

But Field Days board member Ken Button said although that drop-off appears dramatic, it was, while disappointing, not that far off from attendance in an average year.
