Middlebury Police Log: Woman revived after drug overdose

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Police helped revive a woman who had overdosed on drugs in the lobby of a Court Street building on Jan. 17.

Police said Middlebury Regional EMS officials found the woman to be unresponsive. Fortunately, an officer was equipped with Narcan, medication that stimulates bodily functions in a person who has stopped breathing due to drug overdose. Police administered it to the woman, who regained consciousness, according to authorities.

Ambulance staff then took the woman to Porter Hospital, police said.

Vergennes Police Log: Typical calls occupy city police

VERGENNES — Vergennes police handled a variety of incidents and violations between Jan. 15 and 21, including continuing violations of the city’s winter overnight parking ban, minor car accidents, a student drug case, an untimely death, and two animal control issues, all while working on a couple more serious investigations on which they were not yet ready to comment.

During those seven days, Vergennes police:

On Jan. 15:

•  Ticketed a car in violation of the parking ban.

Bristol Police Log: Police still seeking attempted robbery suspect

BRISTOL — Bristol police are still seeking the public’s help in finding out who attempted to rob the National Bank of Middlebury branch office on Main Street on Jan. 13.

As reported in the Jan. 18 Addison Independent, at 11:10 that Saturday morning a woman approximately 5-foot-5 wearing a heavy red checked coat gave the teller a note demanding money but fled on foot before getting anything. The suspect was seen leaving the area in what was described as an older green Subaru Impreza, eastbound on East Street toward Starksboro.

ANWSD voters to decide fate of $7.6 million bond to fix schools

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest School District Board has officially adopted a $7.63 million proposal for voter consideration on Town Meeting Day that board members said would address critical energy efficiency, fire safety and security issues at all four district schools.

Board members at a Wednesday meeting also emphasized that payments on a bond to pay for the plan could be funded without increasing taxes.

Gary Baker seeks return to Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury Selectman Gary Baker hopes to return to the board this March by winning one of two spots up for grabs on Town Meeting Day, March 6.

As the Addison Independent went to press on Friday, Baker and incumbent Selectman Farhad Khan were the only residents to have confirmed their plans to run for the board. Incumbent Selectwoman Susan Shashok has decided not to run for re-election.

Bristol bakery starts new chapter with new owner

BRISTOL — For almost eight years, Celina Ellison had been a big part of the recipe that has produced sweet success for Bristol Bakery on Main Street. Brothers Kevin and Doug Harper picked Ellison as their “house manager,” a role she would perform at both the original bakery on Bristol’s Main Street and at a Hinesburg spin-off that is also doing very well.

Well, the longtime manager has now become the new owner of the bakery, which she has renamed “Bristol Cliffs Café.”

Lawmakers review Middlebury rail bridges project, with higher price tag

MONTPELIER — Members of the Vermont House and Senate Transportation Committees last week took testimony on the latest plans for replacing Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges, and lawmakers appear content to have the project — now estimated at $71 million — begin as scheduled this spring.

The meeting, held last Thursday at the Vermont Statehouse, featured virtually all of the major players in what has been a multi-year planning effort to replace the 1920s-era Main Street and Merchants Row bridges over the railroad.
