Middlebury College admits 343 in early decisions

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has offered 343 students early admission to the Class of 2021. The admitted students were chosen from a pool of 673 applicants — an increase of 6.5 percent over last year — and represent about 51 percent of a class that is expected to total about 705.

Those 343 students are from 35 states, Washington, D.C., and 19 countries.

VTrans launches winter roads portal

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) announced the launch of the Winter Central web portal, a new site to help drivers navigate winter conditions in Vermont. Included in the new portal is Plow Finder, a map that will show the location of all 250 VTransplow trucks in near real-time. The heart of the Plow Finder map is the data from the Automatic Vehicle Location System installed in each truck and augmented by information from the National Weather Service, New England Compass, VTrans’ weather stations and point forecast modeling provided by DarkSky.

Middlebury police receive honors from safety board

MIDDLEBURY — On Jan. 9 the Middlebury Police Department was recognized by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for the department’s efforts in the investigation of the airplane crash that occurred off Schoolhouse Hill Road on Dec. 23.

Folklife director to give farm traditions talk on Jan. 18

NEW HAVEN — Gregory Sharrow, co-director of Middlebury’s Vermont Folklife Center, will explore farm culture of the past, and how it relates to today’s Vermont, in New Haven on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. in the New Haven Town Offices on North Street. The lecture is sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council.

Canoe trail stories to be shared at Green Mountain Club's Jan. 26 meeting

MIDDLEBURY — The Green Mountain Club Bread Loaf Section’s annual meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 26, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society. The annual meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with a brief social time, followed by a short business meeting and a guest speaker with slide show.

The featured speaker will be Dan Brown, owner/innkeeper of the Swift House Inn and part-time adventurer, whose talk is titled “Jeff and Dan’s Big Adventures or Two Coots, One Canoe” on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.

Connor Homes recruiting lenders to reopen Route 7 business

MIDDLEBURY — The former owner of Connor Homes has been meeting this week with potential lenders in hopes of re-acquiring the Route 7 business in Middlebury within the next two weeks.

Mike Connor confirmed on Tuesday he has reached out to the USDA, Vermont Economic Development Authority, Addison County Economic Development Corp. and various banks for advice and/or loans in an effort to forge a deal with Connor Homes’ current ownership, led by investor Sam Pryor.

Ferrisburgh officials again unhappy with town treasurer

FERRISBURGH — Long-simmering tensions between the Ferrisburgh selectboard and elected Town Treasurer Garrit Smits surfaced again recently, when board members canceled Smits’ town credit card after a dispute over whether he should have raised its spending limits.

New owners bring lifetime love of New Haven general store

NEW HAVEN — While today’s customer is a lot likelier to purchase a Kit Kat candy bar than a horse harness, the Village Green Market has been supplying New Haven residents — and acting as an important center for community life — for over 200 years. As the market’s new owners, New Haven native John Roleau and his wife, Margo, will carry on that longstanding tradition.

The Roleaus purchased the store in late December, are carrying out a few renovations and plan to reopen later this month.
