New chef takes reins at the 'Laundry'

VERGENNES — Award-winning Chef Christian Kruse takes the helm of the popular local eatery, Vergennes Laundry, on Oct. 31. Owners Didier and Julianne Murat transformed the original laundromat on 257 Main Street in Vergennes to a French inspired bakery in 2010. Seven years later, Didier and Julianne are moving on to new adventures, entrusting the beloved Laundry to the capable hands of Chef Kruse, who aims to bring high-quality, locally inspired dining to the Vergennes community.

City continues to look at local option tax

VERGENNES — Members of the Vergennes City Council at their Oct. 24 meeting continued their preliminary discussion of local option taxes, which piggyback on state sales-and-use or rooms-and-meals taxes by adding 1 percent for local revenue to either or both.

Before a Vermont municipality can put such taxes in place a charter change is required that must be approved first by voters and then by the Legislature.

Black and white classmates tell real-life story of desegregation

MIDDLEBURY — Fifty-one years ago, Rose Strayhorn Bell, sisters Donnie Copeland Meadows and Fernanda Copeland, and Jim Grimsley showed up for the first day of sixth grade at Alex H. White Elementary in Pollocksville, N.C.

That morning Strayhorn Bell and the Copeland sisters broke the color barrier at what had been an all-white school.

Grimsley had never attended school with African American children.

Funds sought for Vergennes sewer study

VERGENNES — Vergennes could get some financial help in studying how to upgrade its Macdonough Drive pump station, City Manager Mel Hawley told the Vergennes City Council on Oct. 24.

Despite a few recent upgrades, that station has still overflowed untreated wastewater close to a dozen times in the past two years, almost always after heavy rains cause stormwater infiltration into the city’s aging sewer collection system.

Middlebury Area Land Trust celebrates accomplishments of 2017

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Area Land Trust, known as MALT, will celebrate another year of conservation and stewardship in Addison County at its annual meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Middlebury. With over 3,500 acres conserved, MALT will highlight its successes in 2017 and share a vision of strengthening local conservation, stewardship, and recreation in years to come.

VUHS actors turn stage into NYC's '42nd Street'

The Vergennes Union High School Music Department is excited to present their fall musical production of “42nd Street,” a celebration of everything New York — Broadway, Times Square and the people who create the magic of musical theater. The show runs Nov. 16 and 17, at 7 p.m. and Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. at the VUHS auditorium.

Program enlists dogs to help Vermont veterans

MIDDLEBURY — Dale Tucker scooped up a tennis ball and sent it hurtling into the teeth of an unseasonably warm wind that was swirling around the new Middlebury dog park last Tuesday.

His beautiful young German shepherd, Abby, dutifully gave chase.

Abby kept one eye on the ball and the other on Tucker, the center of her universe. Her bond to Tucker is being strengthened through a program called Vermont Paws & Boots, which trains service dogs to aid military veterans and first responders who need a constant companion for savings that can be life-saving.
