Record number of films and fans flock to Middlebury film festival

MIDDLEBURY — “I think this is the best audience we’ve ever had!” said Joan Kron after the screening of her film “Take My Nose… Please,” a documentary about plastic surgery and comedy. The 89-year-old, first-time filmmaker’s work sparked non-stop applause and laughter in the crowd, who gathered in the Town Hall Theater on Aug. 24 for the Opening Night of this year’s Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival.

Garden club announces Roadside Attractions winners

The Middlebury Garden Club has announced the winners of its annual Roadside Attractions Awards. These accolades recognize gardens cultivated by people around the county who are not members of the club. The winners for 2017 include Holly Fulton’s gardens at 18 Brookside in Middlebury, Manjula and John Bombard’s gardens at the Mill at Lewis Creek in Starksboro, Dave Furney’s gardens at 39 Garfield Street in Bristol, Ian and Lindsay Hart’s gardens at 3 Springside in Middlebury and Frances Hall’s garden on Washington Street in Middlebury.

Middlebury demos pop-up bike-pedestrian projects; seeks community feedback

MIDDLEBURY — In addition to the temporary bridges in downtown Middlebury, Middlebury residents are also being exposed to a few pilot bicycle-pedestrian projects in the downtown.

The Middlebury Bike-Ped Technical Assistance working group, in partnership with the bike-ped advocacy group Local Motion, set up a two-week pop-up project designed to test traffic calming strategies. The goal is to determine what strategies work to make downtown areas more bike-pedestrian friendly.

Homestead tax rates drop in Panton, Waltham and Addison

ADDISON — The final 2017-2018 residential property tax rates in the three smaller Addison Northwest School District towns, Panton, Waltham and Addison, are lower than in the 2016-2017 fiscal year, although the decrease in Panton is minimal.

Meanwhile, non-residential rates — paid by owners of business and rental property and second homes along Lake Champlain — dropped in Waltham, rose by less than 2 cents in Addison, and increased by around 5 cents in Panton.

Expect delays in school traffic to Mount Abe

BRISTOL — With the start of the school year, the town of Bristol is reminding residents to expect traffic delays getting to and from Mount Abraham Union High School.

Construction to upgrade water and stormwater infrastructure along West Street is still ongoing. The project area is from Airport Drive to Maple Street. Expect heavy equipment and delays along this area. Munson Earthmoving began the town-contracted project in mid-June. Construction is expected to continue through late November.

ANESU school volunteers must now be fingerprinted

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast School district administrators is alerting the public that there is a new process for all who wish to volunteer in the schools: Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, Beeman and Robinson elementary schools and Mount Abraham Union High School. This applies to anyone who plans to volunteer, chaperone a field trip, or work with students at any point in the school year.

Evergreen Preschool celebrates 35 years serving Vergennes

Evergreen has cared for and nurtured more than 500 children in the past three and a half decades. The current board of directors includes two founding members, Katrina Matthews of Vergennes and Susan Torncello of Shelburne.

Red Sox honor recent VUHS grad

BOSTON — Sophia Parker of Vergennes was recognized as a recipient of the Vermont Red Sox Service Scholarship during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park before the Red Sox-White Sox game on Aug. 5. The program awarded students from public high schools across Vermont with $1,000 scholarships towards their college education based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility, and demonstrated community service.

Volunteers complete first segment of Trail Around Bristol

BRISTOL — Bristol residents working to create a trail system around Bristol reported that they’ve completed their first project: extending and improving the cross country trail behind Mount Abraham Union High School.

“We continue to be so impressed by the enthusiasm in the area,” said Porter Knight, the Bristol Recreation Club board member who is spearheading the trails initiative. “We had people from elementary age to their mid-70s helping on the trail. And I had feedback from several people saying it was a ton of fun.
