MUHS student takes traditional American music to Japan

CORNWALL — Romy Munkres enjoys marching to her own tune, which last month led her from her native Addison County to the Japanese prefecture of Tottori. There, she and four other Vermont youths spent nine days performing traditional American music for their Japanese peers at a major art festival.

Dairy farms face labor struggle; foreign works pose unique challenges

MIDDLEBURY — The Dec. 2 visit to Middlebury from the Mexican consulate in Boston gave Mexicans laboring on Addison County farms an opportunity to get important documents, get informed about legal rights, exchange ideas and experiences, and access various kinds of support.

It also brought area farmers together with Consul General Emilio Rabasa to hear the farmer side of the equation.

Chief among dairy farmer concerns? The continued lack of federal immigration policy that supports the labor needs of dairy farms.

MIDDLEBURY — Many people — residents and visitors alike — this week have been looking around Middlebury for a golden retriever named Willie, who belongs to Doug and Debby Anderson of East Middlebury.

Doug Anderson, executive director of Town Hall Theater, was walking his beloved dog Willie at around 1:45 p.m. Monday when a vehicle struck and slightly injured him while he negotiated one of the Court Square crosswalks.

Communal septic system sought for one of county's biggest trailer parks

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) is seeking funding for a communal sewage disposal system to serve the 67-unit Lindale Mobile Home Park off Route 116/Case Street in Middlebury.

This is a plan that advocates believe will cost-effectively remedy the increasing number of failing, individual septic systems within what is one of the county’s largest affordable housing developments.

Vt. grants aim to boost local food sales

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets this week announced the availability of up to $60,000 of funding for Local Food Market Development (LFMD) Grants to assist eligible Vermont farmers, businesses and value-chain facilitators to reach new markets. Agency officials said they are working to support market opportunities with an institutional or other wholesale focus in Vermont.

Aid available for damaged maple orchards

MIDDLEBURY — Pam Smith, executive director or the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency in Middlebury, this week announced that Addison County is approved to accept applications for the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) to address damages to farmland, notably maple orchards, from high winds.

ECP signup has begun and will end Jan. 19, 2018.
