Vermont leads the nation on immunization

BURLINGTON — Vermont tops the nation in chicken pox vaccinations, according to newly published results from the 2015 National Immunization Survey for Teens (NIS-Teen), but there is more work to be done to ensure all Vermont teens are protected against cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV).

Outside Story: Karner blues butterflies making a comeback

The Karner blue, New Hampshire’s state butterfly, is a wisp of a thing, a tiny fluttering of silvery-blue wings. Unless you happen to be wandering through a pine barren or black-oak savannah, however, you’re unlikely to spot one. Even then, it would be a challenge, as the butterflies have been listed as federally endangered since 1992.

Shoreham Historical Society meets this Wednesday

SHOREHAM — Join the Shoreham Historical Society on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Platt Memorial Library in Shoreham at 7 p.m. There will be a short business meeting followed by a presentation about Levi Morton, vice president (1889-1893) in the Republican administration of Benjamin Harrison. The speaker will be Bob Rathbun, and guests are invited to remain after the program for refreshments.

Second film festival's success marked by larger crowds

MIDDLEBURY — The second annual Middlebury New Filmmaker’s Festival wrapped up Sunday evening as the event’s two founders passed awards to seven top filmmakers from Town Hall Theater’s main stage.

Festival producer Lloyd Komesar and artistic director Jay Craven presented each winner with a VTeddy award — a bear clad in a tuxedo standing atop a platform with the inscribed category — specially created by Vermont Teddy Bear Co., the festival’s headlining sponsor.

ST. ALBANS — “Has anyone here witnessed an overdose or administered Narcan before?” asked Turning Point of Franklin County staff member Melinda Lussier, before equipping residents with free kits of Narcan, a drug used to reverse an opiate overdose, one Friday morning.

Brandon Planning Commission loses its chairman

BRANDON — The Brandon Planning Commission continues to evolve following the recent resignation of Chair Jeff Guevin.

The resignation comes just a month after the Brandon selectboard voted to reduce the number of planning commission members from seven to five. Guevin, an attorney specializing in elder care and estate planning, cited personal reasons for his resignation. He and his wife, Phoebe, have twin daughters. He was appointed to the planning commission in 2011 and named chair in 2014.

ANwSU, O'Brien settle embezzlement case

MIDDLEBURY — Former longtime Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Thomas O’Brien has returned disputed unused vacation pay to his former school district and written a letter of apology to the ANwSU board, and a felony embezzlement case against him has been dropped as part of a settlement of a legal case against him.

Rutland faction argues over whether to accept refugees

RUTLAND — Even as supporters of a proposal to bring Syrian refugees to Rutland made their case, members of a group opposing refugee resettlement in Rutland called on local legislators to press the U.S. State Department to block establishment of a new resettlement site.

They said first they want the application to become a host site made public and they want the city’s board of aldermen to be fully engaged in the process.
