Local group searches for DeLorean to amp up 'Back to the Future' remake

MIDDLEBURY — Two years ago, Kurt Broderson organized a local effort to participate in a remake of the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” film.

He’s now rallying the troops to act out some scenes from the 1980s hit “Back to the Future,” an effort that will also involve the search for a “holy grail.” Only in this case, it’s not the Ark of the Covenant, but rather a rare DeLorean sports car that serves as the vehicle for time travel in “Back to the Future.”

Salisbury art restorers are 'masters of disguise'

Paintings age. Very slowly.

“Much like people do,” said Randy Smith, an art restorer in Salisbury who’s been in the biz since the early ’70s. “You don’t notice it day to day, but after it’s been a while the varnish yellows, there can be nicotine, smoke or mold stains; the paint can blister or crack; even fire sparks can burn small holes.”

That’s when you call Randy and his wife, Linda Hampton Smith, to help restore the piece to it’s original quality.

Middlebury to create new conservation commission

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury is putting together its first-ever conservation commission, a five-person panel that will help inventory the town’s natural resources and provide input on the potential impacts of future development on the community’s waterways, wetlands and other environmental assets.

Longtime Bristol police chief to retire this August

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs will retire at the end of August.

Gibbs officially announced his retirement at the Bristol Police Department staff meeting last Tuesday, June 27, saying: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the community of Bristol.”

Gibbs has served on the Bristol police force for 31 years.

Funds sought for crosswalk lighting in Vergennes

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council last week voted to seek a Vermont Agency of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Program grant to help fund five sets of flashing pedestrian lights at heavily used crosswalks, mostly on Main Street.

The lights cost $11,000 a pair, and City Manager Mel Hawley said required site work, such as metal roadside pedestrian grates, will add to the final cost of installation.

Ferrisburgh nears approval of municipal town plan

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard last week at its second public hearing on a proposed new town plan heard debate on what is apparently the final issue holding up its adoption — a proposed mapping change that would move a couple of properties along Route 7 from a Highway Commercial District to a less permissive Conservation zone.

Vermont Folklife Center offering apprenticeships

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center announces the continuation of the Vermont Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program for its 24th year. Initiated to support Vermont’s living cultural heritage, the program provides stipends of up to $2,000 as honoraria and to cover such expenses as materials and travel. Under the auspices of the program, traditional arts such as blacksmithing, Abenaki basket making, Franco American singing, and Bhutanese Nepali folk dancing have received support.

Susanne Peck's drawings on view at Jackson Gallery

Susanne Peck spent most of her professional life in the New York City area and relocated to Vermont in 2008. A classical singer, educator and conductor, she has always made art and has been drawing commissioned portraits for 26 years. In recent years she has branched out to include abstract and expressionist works as well as representational, and the exhibit will reflect this variety.
