Ilsley Library eyes its space needs

MIDDLEBURY — Ilsley Library Trustee John Freidin on Monday updated the Middlebury selectboard on the library’s ongoing effort to look at its program needs and determine the best way to house them within the Ilsley building on Main Street.

Trustees have formed a committee to tackle to the issue. That panel, headed by Freidin, has circulated a public survey and visited five other libraries that have recently undertaken renovation/expansion projects.

VUHS senior walk raises money, builds community

VERGENNES/MONKTON/STARKSBORO — The annual Vergennes Union High School senior class charity walk-a-thon became more of a hike-a-thon as members of the school’s highest grade traveled by foot from the Willowell Foundation property in Monkton over Hogback Mountain to Starksboro’s Common Ground Center on Oct. 9. The annual fundraiser brought in more than $4,000 to help Camp Kaleidoscope, which serves for families with children on the autism spectrum.

Bread Loaf Campus to be conserved forever

MIDDLEBURY — Nearly a century ago, the visionary Vermont environmentalist Joseph Battell bequeathed to Middlebury College the large tract of land that is home to the Bread Loaf campus. Bordering the Green Mountain National Forest and encompassing numerous areas of ecological and natural interest, the Bread Loaf campus and surrounding forests have long provided the Middlebury community with spaces for outdoor recreation and environmental education.

City store offers microbrews on tap to go

VERGENNES — Anyone in the greater Vergennes area who wants to know the difference between a growler and a growlette has a new way to find out.

They can ask either Frank Trombley or son Jacob Trombley at Vergennes Redemption on Main Street, not far from Kennedy Brothers. Both will happily answer the question about the difference, which is 32 ounces of specialty draft beer and about $4 to $6.

Tax change lets small businesses sell stocks as a local investment

Landowners in Monkton rebuff Vt. Gas offers for easements

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems on Tuesday announced that it had secured 75 percent of the easements it needs to build Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project, a pipeline that will run 41 miles from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.

The South Burlington company said it had made “significant progress” by securing easements for 166 of 221 parcels needed for the route.

Rick Cole to step down as Middlebury fire chief

Vt. Sun reaps benefits of solar

MIDDLEBURY — You’d think that with a name like Vermont Sun Fitness Center, Steve Hare’s business would have gone solar sooner.

The notion of installing solar power panels at the gym off Exchange Street in Middlebury did occur to Hare about a decade ago. But back then, the businessman says, solar arrays were expensive and took a longer period to pay off installation costs than they do now.

Now, he says, thanks to changes in technology and production techniques, that’s changed.
