Vt. hunters took 697 black bears this season

By Addison Independent

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department reports that bear hunters in Vermont had a safe and successful hunting season in 2016. Preliminary numbers show that hunters took 697 black bears during the 81days of the two-part early and late bear seasons. There also were no hunting-related shooting incidents.

This is higher than the past 10-year average of 520 bears being taken, but it is consistent with the goal of stabilizing the bear population to within 4,500 to 6,000 bears, according to Fish & Wildlife Department bear biologist Forrest Hammond.

The 16,160 deer brought home by hunters yielded more than three million meals of local nutritious venison.

Wildlife rehabilitator helps raptors — and others — return to the wild

MONKTON — Helena Nicolay wears leather gloves and a “ratty, old jacket” as she walks up to a barred owl. She moves silently, slowly, deliberately — averting her eyes so as to not present herself as a fellow predator. She holds out a sliver of beef heart at the end of a shorter-than-most-of-us-might-feel-safe-with pair of metal tongs.

The owl snaps up the meat and devours it.

Nicolay offers a little bit more. And a little bit more. The owl eats hungrily, then tilts its head.

“Our goal is to be a community art center,” board member Barbara Z. Nelson said of the school’s great potential as a future site for lectures, children’s summer camps, painting workshops, panel discussions and even maybe an artist in residence.
