Organizers are putting final touches on plan for Middlebury dog park

MIDDLEBURY — Organizers of a new Middlebury dog park have jumped through most of the planning hoops for their pet project and are now trying to fetch the $15,000 it will take to buy a fence to encircle the roughly two-acre property adjacent to the Porter Medical Center campus.

Legislature updates solar energy siting bill in one day; governor to sign it

MONTPELIER — The state Legislature emerged from a marathon special session on Thursday with an amended version of a renewable energy siting bill that had been vetoed by Gov. Peter Shumlin on June 6.

The governor said on Friday that he would sign the bill, known as S.260, designed to give more local control over the siting of solar projects to communities that develop energy plans that are consistent with the state’s long-term renewable energy goals.

Veteran educator Suzy Way to explore new horizons after retiring from Monkton Central

MONKTON — Retiring Monkton Central School teacher Suzy Way is planning big adventures in the coming years, including travel to places like Egypt, Morocco, England, Brazil and Germany. That same sense of adventure, enthusiasm for broader horizons and eagerness to learn about new things and new places lights up in her eyes when she talks about her students.

“They’re always eager to learn about the world,” said Way.

MIDDLEBURY — Usually we say that the kids are “going away to college” because they’re doing just that: going away and leaving their parents behind. Not so for Caitlin McCluskey, who this past Saturday graduated from Community College of Vermont alongside her mother, Angela McCluskey.

While the two Cornwall residents have not actually attended class together during their time at CCV, Angela, 46, says the opportunity to graduate with her 20-year-old daughter is a reward in itself and a signifier of the close relationship between the two.

Mosquito district buys new rig to aid swamp spraying

Deal to run Northlands Job Corps is up for bid

VERGENNES — The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has reopened the contract to operate Northlands Job Corps for new bidders. On Thursday, June 9, interested parties will inspect the federal job-training center on Macdonough Drive, and could conduct additional research there and in Vergennes in the days to come.

Current operator CHP International, the Illinois company that has operated the center for the past 30 months under contract with the DOL, will seek to stay on board, according to a letter sent last week to community members and the Independent.

Civil War-era church service to be held this Sunday

STARKSBORO — The historic Starksboro Village Meeting House returns to the 1860s on Sunday, June 12, at 11 a.m. Chaplain Michael Blakeslee of the Second Vermont Volunteer Infantry, accompanied by Lois Burbank, will lead a recreation of a typical Civil War-era church service.

During the 1860s the meeting house was the center of the community of Starksboro. Many Starksboro Civil War soldiers enlisted in that very building, and while the upper floor held regular Sunday services, the lower level functioned as a town meeting hall.
