College to present fall dance concert Dec. 1 & 2

The Middlebury College Department of Theatre and Dance will present a Fall Dance Concert, an evening of new works titled “Future Felt,” this Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Mahaney Center for the Arts. Six dances will make up an evening of work that celebrates the sharing of Middlebury dance students’ creative processes and research. The performance is coordinated by artist-in-residence Julian Barnett.

Horse Traders to perform in Vergennes

This Saturday, catch Horse Traders as they rock the Vergennes Opera House stage. The Dec. 2 show is part of Hired Hand Brewing’s Opera House Music Series. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10.

The Horse Traders have five veteran performers with a wide and rollicking repertoire. Members include Deb Brisson on vocals, keyboards and percussion; Jon Rooney, vocals and guitar; Rick Marshall, guitar, mandolin and harmonica; Pete Ryan, bass, 12-string guitar and vocals; and John Wallace, drums.

Rupert Waites brings original folk back to Brandon stage

Folk singer-songwriter Rupert Wates returns to Brandon Music on Saturday, Dec. 2. He’ll be debuting material from his new CD, “The Lights Of Paris,” an album which showcases his original, acoustic, melodic art/folk with flavors of jazz and vaudeville.

Wates has been a professional songwriter since the late 1990s when he signed a publishing contract with Eaton Music Limited. Since then he’s won more than 30 songwriting awards.

Vermont State Police Log: Winter weather conditions might have caused several accidents

ADDISON COUNTY — The light snowfall may have contributed to a couple car crashes that Vermont State Police responded to this past Sunday morning.

First, on Nov. 26 at approximately 7 a.m., troopers at the New haven barracks were notified of a one-car crash on Tyler Bridge Road in Monkton. Police report that driver Viktoriia Tokarenko, 21, of Rochester, N.Y., attempted to slow down for a curve near Turkey Lane when the 2006 Honda Civic she was driving went off the roadway. Slippery road conditions were determined to play a factor in the collision.

Bristol Police Log: Man cited for not registering as sex offender

BRISTOL — On Nov. 14, Bristol police arrested Aaron Orbit Gould, 28, of Bristol and cited him for failing to register as a sex offender. Gould had moved from the address he’d listed with the Vermont Sex Offender Registry and had failed to notify the appropriate agencies in the required time.

Gould had been convicted of a separate Sex Offender Registry violation in September.

After arraignment on this latest charge, Gould was released on conditions imposed by the court.

Middlebury Police Log: Shire town police issue drunk-driving citation during busy week

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Derek St. George, 22, of Jacksonville, N.C., for driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop on Route 23 on Nov. 23.

Police said they measured his blood-alcohol content at 0.141 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Located a student who had run away from the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center on Nov. 20.

•  Served temporary restraining orders on two local men on Nov. 20.

Vergennes Police Log: Winter parking ban starts Dec. 1

VERGENNES — Tis the season — to remember that the Vergennes winter parking ban takes effect every year when the clock strikes midnight on Nov. 30.

Between Dec. 1 and March 31 vehicles may not be parked on city streets between the hours of 2 and 6:30 a.m.

As for those that are left out on the streets during those hours?

“Vehicles are subject to being ticketed and towed,” said Police Chief George Merkel.

Noted explorer dies in plane crash in area

PITTSFORD — An 89-year-old Massachusetts man who led an extraordinary life of exploration and excitement died on Wednesday evening while traveling to see his family in Starksboro for Thanksgiving.

Norman L. Baker of Windsor, Mass., was piloting a four-seat Cessna airplane when it crashed in Pittsford. He was the only person on board.

“My dad absolutely loved flying,” Dan Baker of Starksboro told the Independent on Friday afternoon. “He’d rather fly that plane to see friends and family than drive a car.”
