Ferrisburgh Historical Society to meet at workshop

FERRISBURGH — At its April 9 meeting, the Ferrisburgh Historical Society will visit the workshop of Craig Farrow, a master furniture maker and joiner.

Since 1972, Farrow has carved out a career building reproductions of 17th and 18th century furniture and architectural components, working as a joiner, turner, carver,  and cabinetmaker. He works in the old, slow ways, using antique tools and finishes, and making his own tools if necessary to recreate an antique with faithful precision.

Guerry to offer advice for online safety

Instructor to share insights on Aikido

BRISTOL– Aikido holds a unique place among martial arts forms.Although it includes the lineage of ancient forms, Aikido was developed in Japan in the twentieth century. The One World Library Project brings Aikido practitioner and instructor Linda White to Lawrence Memorial Library on Thursday, April 13 from 7-8:30 p.m. to discuss and demonstrate this non-violent martial art form.

Solid Waste district offering free workshop on backyard composting

MIDDLEBURY — For anyone wishing to improve their composting skills, the Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) will offer free backyard composting workshops on the fourth Saturday of each month from April to October.

Workshops will cover the basics of backyard composting, and will have both an indoor presentation and an outdoor demonstration component. As an added bonus, each participant will receive a voucher for a half-priced Soil Saver Composter for $23, (orig. $45) or a half-priced Green Cone Solar Digester for $63, (orig. $125).

Phoenix Feeds joins with Langrock, Sperry & Wool to support Meals on Wheels

NEW HAVEN — Representatives from two area businesses — Phoenix Feeds & Nutrition Inc. of New Haven and Langrock, Sperry & Wool of Burlington and Middlebury — recently presented Age Well with a $10,000 check to kick off the non-profit organization’s 2017 March for Meals campaign.

As the largest provider of Meals on Wheels in Vermont, Age Well participates in this month-long campaign that raises awareness and funds for seniors experiencing hunger, isolation and loss of independence.

Folklife Center to train teachers in multimedia

ACSD considers moving 6th-grade to MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board is expected to vote this June on whether to expand Middlebury Union Middle School to include grades 6-8 beginning in the fall of 2018. It’s a move some district officials believe would allow teachers to more effectively deliver International Baccalaureate Program instruction.

Currently, sixth-graders in the ACSD are taught in elementary schools in the district-member communities of Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. MUMS serves children in grades 7 and 8.

Owners of the Inn at Baldwin Creek and Mary’s Restaurant in Bristol, Doug Mack and Linda Harmon, are away in Italy for a culinary tour. So naturally, their daughter/bartender Laura Mack and sous chef Carin Fredette are throwing a kitchen-takeover party from April 5-9.
