Holmes takes on Keeler in race for Addison County sheriff

MIDDLEBURY —  It was Gov. Peter Shumlin who appointed Don Keeler to serve as Addison County sheriff after longtime incumbent James Coons died in office during the spring of 2012.

Now Keeler is looking for an official mandate from the voters as he seeks to win the post for the first time on Nov. 4. Keeler faces opposition from write-in candidate Ron Holmes, a former deputy with the department. Both men mapped out their priorities for the Addison Independent during recent interviews.

New Haven selectboard says 'no' to solar

NEW HAVEN — New Haven took steps to control its own solar future Oct. 21 when the selectboard voted to oppose two proposed solar projects within its borders and to participate in Public Service Board proceedings for all future applications for solar arrays.

The board voted unanimously to oppose a 2.2-megawatt array on Field Days Road proposed by Green Peak Solar and a 5.5-megawatt array on Route 7 by GroSolar.

Brain injury group to meet in Middlebury on Nov. 3

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Brain Injury Support Group (BIA – MIDD) will feature Lisa Bernardin and Debbie Tracht as co-facilitators on the first Monday of the next six months from 6-7:30 p.m. in Middlebury, in the Ilsley Library’s downstairs meeting room.

This Monday, Nov. 3, Debbie Tracht will present “Executive Functioning Challenges,” causes of which include traumatic brain injury and ADHD. Executive functions contribute to how one deals with attention, daily organization, problem solving, planning and prioritizing.

Osborne House makes early morning trip across bridge

MIDDLEBURY — Early on Monday morning Middlebury College’s Osborne House got a new address. After a plodding journey over Otter Creek, a team of workers manipulating remote controlled dollies moved the 118-ton house to its new location at 6 Cross St.

Local man gives a face to heroin addiction in Vermont

BRANDON — Kyle Pinkham could be your son, your nephew, your grandson, or your brother. A 2006 Otter Valley graduate, he was a good-looking, popular student-athlete who kicked the winning field goal to help the OV football team clinch the 2005 Division IV State Championship.

Bristol's Route 116 bridge officially opens

BRISTOL — It was decades in the making, but Bristol finally has a new bridge on Route 116.

A cadre of local officials and legislators joined state Transportation Secretary Brian Searles Monday afternoon for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the center of the new span, which crosses the New Haven River on Route 116 between River and Carlstrom roads.

Vermonter agrees to quarantine as ebola precaution

BURLINGTON — The Vermont Department of Health on Tuesday afternoon announced that it had requested a Vermonter who has just returned from West Africa to enter voluntary quarantine and active monitoring for fever or symptoms of Ebola for 21 days. This individual agreed, and began quarantine on Oct. 27.

The Health Department did not release the quarantined Vermonter's name, but Rutland Mayor Christopher Louras issued a statement saying that the quarantined person was a Rutland man.

Vermont Gas CEO Don Gilbert to retire

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Vermont Gas Board of Directors announced on Tuesday that Donald Gilbert will be retiring at the end of the year and Donald J. Rendall will become the new president and CEO of Vermont Gas, effective Jan. 1, 2015.

Gilbert, a Hinesburg resident, has led Vermont Gas for more than 13 years.
