Opinion: Revote offers new opportunity

Posted on May 1, 2014 |
By Dorie Bechtel

We, the people of Middlebury, now have the great opportunity to engage in a right of democracy; that is, to honor the referendum passed to give voters another chance to review options on the design and location of new town offices. Imagine the creative idea of Mr. Brush to locate the town office and a senior center on Route 7 in the two buildings once owned by Lightning Photo. There would be plenty of parking. And there is the option to expand for other facilities should the need come up.

Opinion: Voters should affirm support of town office project

Posted on April 30, 2014 |
By Kevin D. Parizo

In light of the fact that we, the taxpayers of Middlebury, are faced with a re-vote on Article 1 (previous Article 6), I am adding my name to the list of those who staunchly support this article. We have discussed and debated this issue regarding the municipal building and gym for well over 25 years. The offer that Middlebury College has presented is both financially generous as well as a fiscally sound investment for this community.

Opinion: Revote on Middlebury project is insulting to some

Posted on April 28, 2014 |
By Barbara Merz

In support of the upcoming Article 1 (former Article 6) municipal building vote, I’d like to point out that the vote in March was very consistent in favor of the project: Article 6, yes; petition to take more time to consider other plans, no; selectman who most vociferously opposed the project, not re-elected — all with a large voter turn out.

Opinion: Middlebury Town Office vote is democratic

Posted on April 24, 2014 |
By Nancy Malcolm

A lot of people have asked me why we are voting again on Article 6 (now Article 1) as we have already passed it. It is legal to revote on something (just one time) if 5 percent of the voters sign a petition that is presented within 30 days of the original vote. In this case 230 legal voters needed to sign such a petition. This is democracy and while it isn’t perfect or easy, it is the best system out there.

For clarification, Article 1 (previous Article 6) reads:

Opinion: Voting against town office plan would back community

In light of the May 13 re-vote of Article 6, now Article 1, I encourage Middlebury residents to vote “no.”

Opinion: Middlebury plan leaves out teens

Posted on April 16, 2014 |
By Emily Joselson

As folks consider the Town Hall/Municipal Building bond revote issue, I would like to raise one important issue — the extent to which any plans for new buildings fail to adequately address the future home of the Teen Center.

I stress from the outset that, although I was formerly on the board of Addison Central Teens, I am no longer, and therefore am speaking solely for myself. My concern is for the siting of the Teen Center, when and if the current town building complex changes.

Petition filed for revote on Middlebury town office plan

Posted on April 7, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Resident Howard “Skip” Brush and his helpers on April 3 successfully capped their petition drive aimed at forcing a reconsideration vote on a new Middlebury municipal building and recreation center. Brush filed the petition, bearing around 280 signatures, with the town clerk’s office with a few hours to spare.

“It was a nice effort by a lot of people,” Brush said of the petition drive. “This is something that had to be done.”

Greg Dennis: College-town collaboration is a winner

Posted on April 2, 2014 |
By Gregory Dennis

Every year after Town Meeting Day, Vermonters get an interesting glimpse at what we “really” think about some controversial statewide issues. That glimpse comes courtesy of State Sen. William Doyle’s survey distributed at many town meetings.

This year’s findings are worth noting on several counts, from legal weed to wind power. But before we consider those statewide issues, let’s first turn to some local ones.
