Lake Division, MVL honor girls' soccer players

ADDISON COUNTY — Many girls’ soccer players from Mount Abraham, Middlebury, Otter Valley and Vergennes union high schools earned postseason honors this fall from either the Lake Division or the Marble Valley League C Division.

Mount Abe’s Ernesta McIntosh earned the highest honor, being named the Lake Division offensive player of the year. She was also chosen as one of four Eagle Lake Division First-Team All-Stars, joining Jesse McKean, Lydia Pitts and Anna Hauman.

Eagle junior tops Independent's Girls' Soccer All-Star Team

ADDISON COUNTY — No banners will be raised by local girls’ high school soccer teams after this fall, but three local squads hosted and won playoff games, including Otter Valley for the first time in program history.

Although the Otters also enjoyed their first-ever winning season and are well-represented on the 2015 Addison Independent Girls’ Soccer All-Star Team, the Independent Co-Player of the Year suited up elsewhere: Mount Abraham junior Ernesta McIntosh.

Middlebury field hockey earns trip to NCAA final four

GENEVA, N.Y. — The Middlebury College field hockey team won an NCAA Division III Regional at William Smith College this past weekend to advance to the tournament’s final four this weekend in Lexington, Va.

The 18-2 Panthers, ranked No. 3 in NCAA D-III, will meet second-ranked The College of New Jersey on Saturday in a national semifinal at 2 p.m. on the campus of Washington & Lee. Defending champion TCNJ (20-1) eliminated the Panthers in a semifinal in 2014. The other semifinal features top-ranked Bowdoin (20-0) and No. 4 Ursinus (19-3) playing at 11 a.m.

Soccer all-star teams include local boys

ADDISON COUNTY — Nineteen members of the four area union high schools earned postseason honors from either the Lake Division or the Marble Valley League’s B Division.

Earning first-team Lake honors were senior Charlie Meyer and junior Owein LaBarr from Mount Abraham and senior Drew Barnicle from Middlebury. Otter Valley senior Collin Eugair was named an MVL B Division all-star.

Panther women's soccer falls to Ephs, 2-1

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams defeated the Middlebury College women’s soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday in a NESCAC semifinal, ending the Panthers’ season with a 7-5-4 record and avenging the 16-1-1 Ephs’ only loss of the season.

The Ephs, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, defeated Bowdoin, 2-0, in the NESCAC final on Sunday to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Eagles shut down Commodores to advance in girls soccer

BRISTOL — The host Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team used tough defense and opportunistic scoring on Tuesday to turn back hard-working Vergennes, 3-0, in a first-round Division II playoff game.

The defending D-II champion and No. 5 seed Eagles improved to 9-6 with their seventh straight win. They will face a familiar foe on the road in a Friday quarterfinal at 3 p.m.: No. 4 Harwood, the team the Eagles defeated in the 2014 final, 1-0.

Tiger girls move on in D-I soccer

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 7 Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer team won its first-round Division I playoff game on Tuesday, 2-0, over visiting No. 10 Rice.

The victory improved the Tigers’ season record to 9-5-1 after a disappointing 1-3-1 start. Since then the Tigers are 8-2.

But they face a challenge next, a 3 p.m. Friday quarterfinal date at No. 2 Colchester (15-0). The two teams did not meet this fall.

Otter Valley Girls net historic win in overtime

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ soccer team wrote another chapter in its historic season on Tuesday, when the Otters won a playoff game for the first time.

In a Division III first-round game, the No. 8 Otters defeated visiting No. 9 Williamstown, 2-1, when senior converted field hockey player Amy Jones one-timed home a feed from classmate Isabelle Kingsley with 4:17 left in the first overtime period.

The Otters this season had already set records for wins, and Tuesday’s home playoff game was a program first.

OV boys’ soccer falls to Harwood

SOUTH DUXBURY — In first-round Division II boys’ soccer playoff action, host No. 5 Harwood ousted No. 12 Otter Valley, 4-0, on Wednesday.

The Highlanders received three goals from Philip Hekeler and improved to 8-1-3; they advanced to a Saturday quarterfinal at No. 4 Mount Abraham.

The Otters finished at 3-9-3 despite what the Harwood coach described as a “massive” effort on their part and despite 17 saves, many of them challenging, from goalie Colin Nicklaw. OV tested Highland goalie Esteban Garcia Guiance five times.

Boys' soccer: Tigers, Commodores ousted

ADDISON COUNTY — In high school boys’ soccer playoff action earlier this week, Middlebury and Vergennes were eliminated on the road in first-round play.

Mount Abraham, the No. 4 seed in Division II, and Otter Valley, D-II’s No. 12 seed, played on Wednesday.

No. 4 Mt. Abe defeated 13 Lamoille, 4-1. In Duxbury, No. 5 Harwood ousted No. 12 OV, 4-0.
