Panther women's hockey win propels them to #4 ranking

MIDDLEBURY  — Middlebury College women’s hockey won three recent games to improve to 8-2-1, 5-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers are ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III.

Middlebury next faces a key NESCAC series this weekend at home vs. first-place Amherst. The Jeffs are 10-1-1 overall and 6-0 in league play. Game times are 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

On this past Tuesday, Middlebury’s Jessica Young scored 1:54 into overtime to give the Panthers a 2-1 win at Utica (5-4-2).

Karl Lindholm: They hockey Mandigos — fathers & daughters

She professes, “hockey is a big part of my identity,” so when she was looking at colleges, the quality of their women’s ice hockey programs was paramount.

She considered Bowdoin, Amherst, Hamilton — and Middlebury, all excellent programs with coaches she respected.

Not the least of her considerations was the coach. She chose to play for the most successful Division 3 women’s ice hockey coach in the country:

Panther men's basketball back in action with two wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team won twice recently as second-semester play opened to improve to 9-0 entering NESCAC play this weekend.

The Panthers will play at Bates on Friday and at Tufts on Sunday. Despite their record, the Panthers remain unranked, although they received votes in the Jan. 6 NCAA Division III poll.

On Jan. 2, the Panthers thumped visiting Salve Regina, 94-66. A 30-12 run in the final 10 minutes of the first half decided matters as the Seahawks dropped to 3-7.

Panther women's basketball wins one of three

PLATTSBURGH — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team won once in three recent outings as its second semester play opened. The Panthers are 7-4 heading into league play, which begins this weekend with home games vs. Bates at 7 p.m. on Friday and Tufts at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

On Tuesday, host Plattsburgh took control with a 15-2 first-half run on the way to a 79-58 win over the Panthers. The Cardinals led at the break, 40-22, and led by at least 20 for most of the second half.

Panther women's hockey earns tie vs. Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team returned to second-semester action on Jan. 3 by earning a 2-2 tie at Elmira.

The 5-2-1 Panthers entered the game ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III, while the 9-1-1 Soaring Eagles — who defeated Middlebury earlier this season — were ranked No. 2.

The Panthers will skate at home this weekend versus Wesleyan on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.

In a scoreless first period, both teams launched 13 shots on goal.

Panther men's hockey splits games in N.Y. tournament

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team opened second-semester play by splitting two games at the New Year’s College Hockey Classic, which the 3-5-2 Panthers hosted at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.

The Panthers opened by defeating St. Michael’s, 2-1, on Jan. 2, but dropped the finale, 4-1, to Hobart on Saturday. The Panthers are on the road this weekend at Trinity and Wesleyan.

Panther men's hockey splits weekend games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team split two home games this past weekend to end first-semester play with a 2-4-2 record, 2-2-2 in NESCAC. Middlebury returns to action on Jan. 2 and 3 in Lake Placid, N.Y., when it hosts the New Year’s College Hockey Classic.

On Saturday, Middlebury took a 3-0 lead and went on to a 6-2 victory over Hamilton (3-3-1, 2-2-1). 

Middlebury broke on top 5:10 into the game with a shorthanded goal. Paul Falvey netted the rebound of a George Ordway shot for his first career goal.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team won a pair of home games this past weekend to close first-semester play with a 6-2 record. The Panthers will return to action after the holiday break with a Jan. 3 game at Anna Maria. Their NESCAC schedule begins with home games on Jan. 9 and 11 vs. Bates and Tufts, respectively.

Panther women's hockey tips Spartans

CASTLETON — The Middlebury women’s hockey team on Saturday wrapped up its first semester with a 5-2 win at Castleton (6-4-1). The Panthers, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III, improved to 5-2 and return to action at Elmira on Jan. 3.

Middlebury outshot the Spartans, 46-20, and struck 3:48 into the opening period when Emily Fluke notched her fifth goal of the year by converting Jessica Young’s feed from behind the net.

Panthers beat Skidmore on last-second shot

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team on Saturday completed its preseason goal of an undefeated first semester, but it took a dramatic comeback, some good luck and a last-second hoop from a player who had missed his first five shots.

Sophomore guard and former Missisquoi Valley Union High School standout Matt St. Amour made the most of a broken inbounds play with 7.2 seconds to go and visiting Skidmore — and former Vergennes Union High School all-star Connor Merrill — leading, 56-55.
