By Zach Despart

SHOREHAM — Vermont Gas Systems and the Shoreham selectboard announced on Thursday that they had agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding related to the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project, a natural gas pipeline that would run through the town.

The agreement sets conditions about how and where the natural gas transmission line can be built and mandates emergency training and safety measures.

Vermont Gas requests permit waiver to speed construction

Posted on June 16, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems has asked the Vermont Public Service Board to waive one of the conditions of the Certificate of Public Good for Phase I of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas project.

The waiver would permit Vermont Gas to begin construction on Phase I of the pipeline without securing all the necessary state and federal permits, which the December 2013 Certificate of Public Good mandates.

Opinion: Green  technology  not  yet  able  to  meet  all  demands

Posted on June 16, 2014 |
By Peter Conlon

In a letter to the editor last week, environmental scholar and leader Bill McKibben showcased the progress Germany has made in moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources as a reason we should reject a natural gas pipeline in Addison County. The argument goes that investing in a fossil fuel infrastructure only makes us more reliant on fossil fuels, in this case natural gas.

Opinion: Message rings true for gas pipeline opponents

Posted on June 16, 2014 |
By Randy Martin

I was moved by the June 9 guest editorial, “Make your bed perfectly, and don’t ring that bell.” I also had read and watched the video of the commencement address delivered by Naval Admiral William H. McRaven to the University of Texas graduates. I highly recommend reading or watching his speech in its entirety. They truly are “words to live by.”

State eminent domain laws tip balance toward Vt. Gas

Posted on February 24, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

pipeline2473.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — If Vermont Gas Systems does move forward with eminent domain proceedings against Addison County landowners to secure necessary easements to build its proposed natural gas pipeline, it will have both state statute and recent precedents on its side.

The Canadian-owned utility sent letters to nine Monkton homes last month stating that if an agreement on a right-of-way easement could not be reached, the utility would have no choice but to begin the process of eminent domain.

WHITING  — Monday’s Legislative Breakfast in Whiting drew several Cornwall residents who urged lawmakers to slow down or suspend a Public Service Board review of Vermont Gas Systems’s proposed “Phase II” natural gas pipeline. CORNWALL — A big majority of Cornwall residents are opposed to Vermont Gas Systems’ proposed “Phase II” project that would extend a natural gas pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., according to the results of a townwide survey recently circulated by the town’s selectboard.

The survey, sent out to Cornwall’s approximately 500 households, asked residents if:

Opinion: Proposed gas pipeline runs counter to regional plan

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Cornwall selectboard

Editor’s note: The Cornwall selectboard on Jan. 30 sent this letter to all Addison County Regional Planning Commission members.

Your commission has been asked to approve Vermont Gas’ proposed “Phase 2” natural gas transmission pipeline through our community. We expect you are familiar with the details of that proposal and the arguments made by proponents. The Cornwall selectboard respectfully requests that you comply with the ACRPC Regional Plan and disapprove the request.

VPIRG claims feds have jurisdiction over pipeline

Posted on January 30, 2014 |
By Anne Galloway VTDigger.org

MONTPELIER — VPIRG has asked the Public Service Board to halt deliberations on Vermont Gas’ proposal to build a natural gas pipeline from Vermont to Ticonderoga, N.Y.

The environmental group filed a motion to dismiss with the board on Monday.

Bristol attorney James Dumont, representing VPIRG, argues the pipeline is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission — not the Vermont Public Service Board — because the pipeline would cross state lines.
