Mount Abe students study in Costa Rica

Pitts fifth in decathalon; other Eagles compete

BURLINGTON — Mount Abraham Union High School freshman Lydia Pitts finished fifth in the annual Vermont high school girls’ decathlon championship, which was held this past Monday and Tuesday at the University of Vermont.

Woodstock senior Kathryn Bassette won the event with 4,281 points, followed by her sophomore teammate Anna Diefenbach. St. Johnsbury’s Hannah Ryan (4,010) and Harwood’s Emma Russo (4,006) were next, followed by Pitts at 3,945 in a tight race.

Third vote on Mt. Abe budget set for June 9

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board is asking Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters to mark their calendars for June 9, when the board expects to hold a vote on a third proposed FY 2016 spending plan for the school.

“The process of developing that new budget will be worked on over the next few weeks,” said board chair Dawn Griswold in a statement.

Eagle girls win 9th Lake Division hoop game

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team on Tuesday bolted to a 14-3 lead on the way to a 37-29 victory over visiting Colchester.

The Eagles remained unbeaten against Lake Division opponents at 9-0, won their fourth straight game and eighth in nine outings, and improved to 10-5 overall. Unofficially, Tuesday’s win moved Mount Abe at least temporarily into third place in Division II heading into a Friday game at Middlebury.

Against the 4-10 Lakers, Emma Carter (16 points) and Jen Gordon (nine) led the Eagle offense.

Opinion: Mount Abe building project excludes 'hands-on' space

First and foremost I am writing this representing myself only. If what I am saying rings true with anyone else then it will serve as a reminder that you are not alone in your thoughts.

Second, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the folks on the building advisory committee for their long hours and hard work. My remarks are in no way meant to downplay your findings, only to express my opinion.

Opinion: School bond would add to surging ANeSU taxes

I am responding to information that was sent out on the Mount Abe Renovation Project (air quality, tandem classrooms, access to the auditorium, pool, gym and library, etc.).

It is proposed that we would spend $32.6 million to add discretionary, nice-to-have, features for Mount Abe. Our property taxes are out of control and we still spend time and money figuring out how to spend more.

USDA rule prompts schools to discontinue local milk

MIDDLEBURY — Rebekah Chamberlain was disappointed when she showed up for her first week of classes as a high schooler. Last year as an eighth-grader in middle school, she’d been told she could buy locally produced Monument Farms milk in the Middlebury Union High School cafeteria.

But when lunchtime came around last month, Monument Farms milk was nowhere to be found.

“It’s, like, the best milk,” said Chamberlain, 14, of Bridport.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham/Vergennes football team on Saturday shrugged off a slow start, several early mistakes and a second-half monsoon to defeat visiting Winooski, 28-8.

The 2-0 Eagles are tied for first place in Division II with 2013 finalists Woodstock and Mill River.

Little League: Mt. Abe youth softball team wins state crown

LYNDONVILLE — The Mount Abraham 11-and-12-year-old Little League softball all-star team ran the table at this past weekend’s double-elimination state tournament in Lyndonville to earn the title of Vermont champions.

Mount Abe, the District I champion, opened the tournament by drawing a bye on Thursday, July 11, and then defeated the Essex all-stars, 11-7, on Friday. On Saturday, host Lyndonville eliminated Essex, and on Sunday, Mount Abe nailed down the crown by blanking Lyndonville, 10-0.
