MIDDLEBURY — Monday ushered in a new era for Middlebury municipal employees, who began working in the new, expansive town office building at 77 Main St. And on Tuesday, those workers were still pinching themselves as they settled into a facility that was more than a decade in the making.

“It doesn’t seem real quite yet,” a beaming Beth Dow said from her sumptuous office on the second floor of the stately structure.

Top stories of 2015: #10 — Critical town buildings take shape in Middlebury, Bristol and Ferrisburgh

Posted on January 4, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

After years of discussion, major infrastructure projects began in both Middlebury and Bristol in 2015, while Ferrisburgh also went big last year.

In Middlebury, a crew broke ground in the spring on the $6.5 million project to build a downtown municipal office building and a Creek Road town gymnasium and recreation center. After much debate, town voters had backed the projects in March 2014 (and reaffirmed that in May 2014).

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has agreed to pay up to $287,550 for additional equipment designed to make the town’s soon-to-be-built municipal building a “net-zero” project, meaning the total amount of energy to be used by the structure on an annual basis will roughly equal the amount of renewable energy created at the site.

Opinion: Town office is 'a great idea'

Posted on February 6, 2014 |
By Jim Larrabee

I can’t remain silent any longer. The selectboard’s proposed municipal building project in partnership with Middlebury College is a great deal, and I plan to support it with my vote. Is the proposed project perfect? No. However if we wait for perfection, I fear we will wait forever.

I would also like to publicly thank Victor Nuovo for all his years of service to the town of Middlebury. We all benefited from his wisdom and leadership.

Jim Larrabee, Middlebury

Opinion: College, town selectmen have been unfairly vilified

Posted on February 3, 2014 |
By Frank Punderson

Naysayers to the college’s offer have their right to object, but to cast the college as devious, pursuing only its self-interest; as being involved in a “land grab”; to talk of conspiracy; to vilify a respected citizen and selectman, Victor Nuovo — is as sad as it is ludicrous.
