Middlebury town office plan gets sharp rebuke at 1st public hearing

MIDDLEBURY — The town should step back and consider long-term community needs — including those of the Ilsley Library and downtown parking — before seriously considering ceding public property to Middlebury College in exchange for $5.5 million toward a new, relocated municipal building and a gym.

Middlebury Police Log: Man revived after alleged heroin overdose

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a report of an unresponsive man who had allegedly overdosed on heroin in a Case Street residence on June 27. Rescue officials were able to revive the man, and the matter remains under investigation, according to police.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Turned over two loose dogs to the local animal control officer on June 27. The dogs were found in the East Main Street area, according to police.

Guest editorial: Town-gown plan lauded, but needs public’s participation

I’m excited about the “Plan forged for new Middlebury offices” described in the June 13 edition of the Addison Independent. I’ve devoted my professional career to encouraging and assisting communities all around the country to proactively steer their futures. There are far too many examples of communities losing their character and their economic vibrancy to incremental, uncoordinated growth driven by short-term economic opportunity and huge corporate domination.

Super volunteers to be honored at Pops Concert

MIDDLEBURY — For their active, longtime volunteer service to the Middlebury community, the Sheldon Museum will recognize “T” and Cy Tall as the honorary chairs of the 21st annual Pops Concert and Fireworks Display to be held on Friday, June 28, on the grounds behind Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts. The grounds open at 5:30 p.m., the Vermont Philharmonic Pops Concert starts at 7:30 p.m., and the evening concludes triumphantly at dark with a spectacular fireworks display.

Grants for local apple, meat-cutting projects aims to fuel local foods movement

ADDISON COUNTY — Nearly $100,000 in grants to two local apple operations announced last week, plus additional grants supporting meat-cutting and composting efforts, aim to help businesses cultivating the local foods market.

Ultimately, the awards through the highly competitive Working Lands Enterprise Fund should make locally grown and processed foods more readily available to Vermont consumers.

Mary Hogan School athletes enyoy their day in the sun

MIDDLEBURY — Another enjoyable day was had by young athletes at the recent Mary Hogan Elementary School track and field meet, which the school’s physical education department holds every year to introduce fifth- and sixth-grade students to the sport and allow them a fun few hours in the sun.

Several students made the most of it at the May 28 event, which was held at the Middlebury College track: Multiple event winners included Ada Anderson, Ben Turner, Nicky Niemo, Talin Teague, Merry Kimble, Caleb Benz and Tyler Buxton.
