Middlebury location eyed for 16 townhouses

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Development Review Board on March 10 began its review of a proposal to build 16 townhouses on a 1.19-acre site at the Middlebury South Village (MSV) development off Court Street.

WomenSafe honors Natalie Peters as a world changer

MIDDLEBURY — WomenSafe has named Natalie Peters of Middlebury as the recipient of the 2014 Kimberly Krans Women Who Change the World Award. A public reception will be held on Wednesday, March 26, from 5-6:30 p.m. at 109 Catamount Park in Middlebury to honor and celebrate Peters’ dedication to the community. Refreshments will be provided.

Upcoming expo to help us think about sustainability

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County residents will be able to discuss new sustainable approaches to everyday life at the Sustainable Living Expo scheduled for March 29 at the Middlebury Union High School. The event, organized by the Addison County Relocalization Network (ACORN), will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature 100 exhibitors and 35 workshops, including student presentations, off-site tours, live music and local food samplings.

ADDISON COUNTY — There was a day when renting out VHS tapes was almost as good as printing cash, said Terry Pellegrino.

Pellegrino, approaching 65, is known in Middlebury as the long-time co-owner of Video King, across the parking lot from Shaw’s Supermarket.

Last week, Pellegrino, a Castleton resident who with another five family members has operated a string of Video Kings in Vermont for more than 25 years, recalled the golden days of the movie rental trade.

Opinion: Asermily thankful for voter support

I seek to collaborate with and listen to all residents, fellow selectboard members, town officials and stakeholders to reach solutions that work for the good of the town and its taxpayers. I will support an open participatory process that allows you to be informed and to share your ideas or questions. This is my top priority. Middlebury Police Log: Police respond to stabbing, victim suspected

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of a stabbing on Court Street on March 4. Police determined that the complainant had not been stabbed but had actually injured himself.

Police got some mental health counseling for the complainant.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Separated a Court Street couple engaged in a heated verbal argument on March 4.

Opinion: Newspaper should consider revising its editorial policy

Because of the closeness of the vote for the town/college plan for new town hall and recreation facilities, I believe it can be reasonably argued that Angelo Lynn’s editorials in the Addison Independent made the difference in the result of citizens’ choice on article 6. In recent editorials Mr. Lynn has been a dependable cheerleader for one side among the voices speaking about the future of our town.

Middlebury voters back $6.5 million town office/gym bond

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on Tuesday voted 915 to 798 in favor of a $6.5 million plan to build a new municipal building at 77 Main St. and a new recreation center on Creek Road.

Asermily, Carpenter, George win Middlebury selectboard election

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard will welcome two new members and a familiar face when it convenes for its first post-Town Meeting Day gathering on March 11.

Local voters this past Tuesday returned Middlebury selectboard Chairman Dean George to office for another year. George garnered 960 votes for the one-year term, giving him the victory over challenger Heather Seeley, who recorded 662 tallies.
