VERGENNES — The keynote speaker at the service following the Vergennes Memorial Day parade will bring a lifetime of experience to the podium on the city green. Michael Wojciechowski, a Purple Heart recipient and highly decorated soldier, served in the Army National Guard for more than a quarter of a century — some of that in the hot spots of Iraq and Afghanistan.

He lives with his wife, Elizabeth, and family in Addison, and is a member of American Legion Post 14.

VERGENNES — For the past 20 years, Beth Marr has celebrated Memorial Day with a traditional feast at her house. The menu is standard Cajun fare every year: corn-on-the-cob, sweet onions, Polish sausage and a secret spice potion created by the Vergennes resident herself.

Ten years ago, Marr’s friends surprised her with a Memorial Day float on her 40th.

Six Addison County towns will host Memorial Day parades this weekend, and one town — Monkton — will wrap it all up with a solemn observance on Monday evening.

SALISBURY — Salisbury residents will have an extra reason to honor their local veterans this Memorial Day thanks to a successful effort by the local historical society to install a monument on town-owned land off of Maple Street.

The society, led by Barry Whitney Jr., spent the last seven years raising money to create the first designated veterans’ park for honoring all local servicemen and women who’ve served during every major conflict dating back to the Revolutionary War.
