Middlebury eyed for methadone clinic

MIDDLEBURY — State and local health care administrators are studying the possibility of opening a methadone clinic in Middlebury, a plan that has some local officials concerned about the prospect of such a service producing a spike in drug-related crime in Addison County’s shire town.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid, similar to morphine. It is used as pain reliever, but also as part of a treatment plan to reduce withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to heroin or other narcotic drugs.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union officials believe that raising healthy and well-adjusted children is a challenge, and that even the most prepared parents sometimes need a little coaching.

With that in mind, ACSU health coordinator Mary Gill and more than dozen other ACSU elementary school teachers, counselors and principals are taking time out of their summer, learning how to help make parents’ jobs a little easier.

This ancient art and science of manipulating the foot to stimulate different parts of the body and release tension has been around since ancient Egypt, and now it’s here in Brandon. A former pharmacy technician and LPN, Brown apprenticed with Middlebury Reflexologist Katherine Windham after hearing her speak at a women’s club meeting in her hometown of Orwell.

Porter nursing home offers a room reserved for terminally ill patients

Sen. Claire Ayer appointed to health care nominating team

MIDDLEBURY — Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Weybridge, has been named to a nine-member state panel that will vet nominees for the Green Mountain Care Board, which will help design and administer major components of a single-payer health care system for Vermont.

Gov. Peter Shumlin on Wednesday announced the members of the nine-member Green Mountain Health Care Board nominating committee. As dictated by state statute, the Governor appointed three, House Speaker Shap Smith appointed three, and Senate President Pro Tem John Campbell appointed three.

Health care reform bill clears Senate

MIDDLEBURY — Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Weybridge, received a lot of feedback on Tuesday in wake of the Senate’s passage, by a 21-9 vote, of a bill that lays the foundation for a single-payer health care system in Vermont.

But perhaps none of the feedback touched her as much as a message she got from the parents of her new grandchild, who turned two years old this week.

Since Tuesday, Vermont's gotten some national coverage on the topic of health care reform, not the least of which were Gov. Peter Shumlin's appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC (video below) and on NPR's The Diane Rehm Show.

The occasion for Shumlin's appearances — and the national attention — was the passage of S.57 in the Vermont Senate, which sets the state on track to offer health insurance to all Vermonters. A committee will now reconcile the House and Senate versions of the bill before it heads to Shumlin's desk.

House OKs health care bill with local support

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County’s House delegation on Thursday voted along party lines on ground-breaking health care reform legislation that will now move on to the state Senate.

The Vermont House voted 92-49 in favor of H.202, legislation that establishes a road map for a single-payer health care system for the state.

But recent months have seen Havens, a 52-year-old custodian at MUHS, do a little teaching of his own while tidying up the campus. And it’s a lesson steeped in courage and built on a real-life testimonial on the dangers of smoking.
