Community Conversations' series resumes this Sunday, Oct. 15, with panel on climate justice

MIDDLEBURY — “Climate Justice: Assuring Fair Access for all Vermonters to a Clean and Healthy Environment” will be the topic of the next in a series Community Conversations held at the Middlebury Congregational Church, sponsored by Andy Nagy-Benson and Emily Joselson.

This event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15, from 4-5:30 p.m., with a panel including Maeve McBride, director of the statewide environmental organization 350VT, Ingrid Pixley, board member of the Addison County Community Trust, and Marc Cesario, co-owner of Meeting Place Farm in Cornwall.

Climate opportunity: Initiative seeks creative innovations in new economy

MIDDLEBURY — How does a community position itself to reap the benefits of the new climate economy? That was the core question about 75-100 Middlebury-area residents grappled with Monday afternoon and evening at the kick-off of the Greater Middlebury Climate Economy Initiative — a series of community forums and task forces that will work over the next couple of years to make progress toward a handful of community goals.

The Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD), partnering with Green Mountain Power and Efficiency Vermont, sponsored the Middlebury event.

Keeping the heat on global warming; Interfaith Climate Action Network melds prayer and activism

MIDDLEBURY — When President Donald Trump announced the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement this summer, Addison County’s Interfaith Climate Action Network (ICAN) took action. The group held a vigil on the Middlebury town green and has continued to hold weekly vigils every Saturday.

Now, as climate experts weigh in on the ways that global warming added even more destructive power to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the group is looking for even more ways to engage.

Middlebury College achieves carbon neutrality

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has won an important battle in what Resident Scholar Bill McKibben recently asserted must become an all-out war on climate change.

Late last week the college announced it had reached carbon neutrality, meaning it has brought its net carbon footprint to zero.

“I am thrilled to announce this significant moment in Middlebury’s history of environmental leadership,” said President Laurie Patton, in the announcement.

Vermont orchards adapt to warmer climate

SHOREHAM — Farmers always have to deal with unpredictable weather, but growers of perennial plants like apple trees face additional difficulties with a changing climate. Vermont orchardists have been dealing with the reality of global warming — successfully for the most part — for years, according to Champlain Orchards co-owner and head orchardist Bill Suhr.

MIDDLEBURY — “I admire you guys, I really do. It’s great to be here,” Congressman Peter Welch told a group of Middlebury College student activists Monday as he met with them to discuss ways to address climate change and share his reflections on effective leadership in the face of tough challenges.

Repeatedly throughout the discussion, Welch, 68, thanked the students for their leadership and compared the work of today’s young activists on climate change to the battles his own generation waged in the Civil Rights Movement.
