Matt Dickerson: Acadia part 2: Of salters, alewives and estuaries

Posted on May 31, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

Dickerson, Matt ONLINE.jpg

We parked the Outback at a little dirt pull-off by a highway bridge. Based on several different guides and personal recommendations, this tidal marsh was high on my list of paddling destinations during my three-week residency at Acadia National Park, and the bridge at the outlet of the marsh where it flowed out into a harbor was the recommended put-in. My wife and I arrived about three hours before high tide in hopes of riding the incoming tide all the way upriver to the very start of the marsh — the estuary where several cold water streams flowed into the brackish saltwater.

Matt Dickerson: Haunted fishing memories

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

I had just finished my best ever day of steelhead fishing and I was in the pickup truck with my guide Ryan driving back to town. I commented that days like I’d just had must get him a lot of repeat clients. It wasn’t idle banter. I was already trying to figure out when and how I might get back to that river, and I knew that Rain Coast Guides had already nearly booked most of March of 2019 more than a year in advance.

Ryan laughed. No, he said. It isn’t necessarily the great days that bring clients back. Often, it’s the lousy days.

Young Ferrisburgh angler pulls in big fish

Fish kid Chase Stokes pike Resized9520170717951328321 cmyk.jpg

FERRISBURGH — Chase Stokes was no mere novice when he landed a state record carp this past spring. He had been fishing for almost a decade when he hauled in a 33.25-pound carp that measured 40 inches in length from Otter Creek in Panton this past April.

It took skill to land a fish that was nearly half as large as his own 76-pound body.

“I’ve been fishing since I was one-and-a-quarter,” the Ferrisburgh 11-year-old said in a recent interview.

Chase is a bit of a phenom when it comes to fishing, but he likes to hunt, as well.

Matt Dickerson: Reflections on catching native and invasive trout

Posted on August 3, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Matt Dickerson DSC02630 (1).JPG

There I was again, having spent three days traveling along beautiful Wyoming trout water without a chance to actually wet my line, just as I had the previous week (and in my previous column). Only this time it was in the Shoshone National Forest and Yellowstone National Park, rather than the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Vermont becomes first state to repeal felt wader ban

Posted on June 27, 2016 |
By Emma Cotton

ADDISON COUNTY — In 2011 Vermont banned people who fish from wearing felt-soled wading boots with the goal of preventing the spread of didymo. At that time, it was thought that this slimy algae was an invasive species, and that it could be transported between rivers in the waders’ porous felt soles.

Now Vermont, the second of seven states to prohibit felt-soled boots, will repeal the ban on July 1.

Matt Dickerson: Angler getting into hot water

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

It was the last day of May, but it felt more like the last day of June. On my way home a little after 5 p.m. the air temperature was still over 80 degrees F. And that was one of the cooler days of the past week. An hour or so later, when I got onto the Middlebury River with my waders and fly rod, the water temperature was in the upper 60s according to my stream thermometer. Given how warm and dry it had been, it wasn’t surprising to find the river was also running low, again more like late June or even July conditions.

Matt Dickerson: Chasing the trout chasers

Posted on May 18, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Matt Dickerson col Cadoret pike 7194.jpg

I had been on the river for less than an hour when I heard the distinctive “loot galoot” of a bittern. The sound brought back memories from 45 years earlier, and childhood fishing trips to northern Maine with my father pursuing wild brook trout. But this trip was in Vermont. And I was not pursuing trout. I was chasing after pike. Or, rather, hoping pike would do some chasing.
