More Addison County Fair and Field Days Results 2017

The following are results of competitions at Addison County Fair and Field Days, which ran at the New Haven fairgrounds Aug. 8-12, 2017.

Cast Iron Skillet Toss

NEW HAVEN — the following are results from the Cast Iron Skillet Toss competition on Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Age 5 to 10

1st: Ava Mullin, Addison, 34 feet, 6 inches.

2nd: Isaac, Marston Mills, Mass., 24 feet.

3rd: Helen Curran, Whiting, 21 feet, 11 inches.

4th: Jack Gagnon, Norwalk, Conn., 19 feet, 10 inches.

Field Days stays grounded in agricultural education

NEW HAVEN — In 1948, soon-to-be 100-year-old Lucien Paquette spearheaded a new event to educate the public about new farming technology and techniques. Organizers called it Addison County Fair and Field Days.

Though Paquette has long-since retired from his position as the Addison County agricultural agent for the University of Vermont Extension, the program he worked for, continues its educational mission at Field Days 68 years later.

Opinion: Bear exhibit sent a bad message

I did go to Field Days — twice, to work at a booth. Today, I learned that there were bears in cages for the public to view. I did not see them, or this letter would be more strongly worded, perhaps.

The person telling me this said, “They were rescued.” Is this what the Fish and Wildlife people and the Humane Society recommend?

NEW HAVEN — Addison County Forester Chris Olson is right outside the Kelly James Natural Resources Pavilion at the Addison County Field Days site answering questions about the different grades of timber lying felled outside the forestry area. Inside the pavilion, Green Mountain National Forest rangers Chris Mattrick and Holly Knox tell a young fellow in a green hat about how recreation in the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area has been on the rise the past several years.

Brothers keep antique farm equipment running

Outside, at the back of the Antique Farm Equipment demonstration area, brothers Josh Parks, 35, and Zak Parks, 30, are working on the engine of a 1938 McCormick-Deering tractor, trying to get it running. They’ve been working on it since Sunday.

They’ve overnighted a head gasket from a specialty supply company. They’ve replaced a valve, but it’s still not running. Josh cranks hard at the hand crank at the front of the tractor. No go.

The two men’s expressions and focus on the task at hand are as intense as any brain surgeon’s.
