CORNWALL — Four Addison Central Supervisory Union schools are considering hosting solar arrays as a means of lowering their respective electricity bills while providing on-site renewable energy lessons for their students.

At issue are potential agreements between All Earth Renewables (AER) and the elementary schools in Cornwall, Ripton, Salisbury and Weybridge. The respective directors of those schools are now considering 15-year contracts with AER to install solar trackers of varying sizes on-site or on nearby municipal property.

ADDISON COUNTY — The eighth annual Way to Go! commuter challenge kicked off on Monday morning, as people around the state headed to work on foot, by bike and by bus.

The weeklong event, which this year runs from May 14 through 18, invites participation from individuals, schools and businesses, offering awards to those who conserve the most. Last year, the city of Vergennes and the Goodrich Corp.’s Vergennes office both won recognition.

Amendments fly in debate over merger of GMP, CVPS

Posted on April 26, 2012 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — Local lawmakers on Tuesday and Wednesday fielded several amendments related to the proposed combining of the state’s two largest utilities, much of it related to a $21 million payback that some believe is owed to electricity ratepayers as a condition of the merger.

The $21 million in question represents additional money that electricity ratepayers were assessed to help shore up a financially strapped Central Vermont Public Service Corp. (CVPS) back in 2001.

MIDDLEBURY — Last month the Addison County Regional Planning Commission installed two charging stations for electric and plug-in vehicles on the east side of their Seminary Street building in Middlebury.

The chargers are part of a larger project to introduce and test the feasibility of electric and plug-in vehicles in Vermont. The planning commission last year outfitted a used Toyota Prius with an extra 5-kilowatt battery that gives the car up to 100 miles to the gallon.

Lawmakers at odds on $21M payback

Posted on April 5, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Most local lawmakers said they are not keen on intervening in a case involving the proposed return to electricity ratepayers of around $21 million that was used to help stabilize Central Vermont Public Service Corp. in 2001 when it ran into some financial trouble.

CVPS, the state’s largest utility, weathered that financial storm (associated with hydro-power contracts) and is now on the verge of being acquired by, and merged with, Green Mountain Power (GMP) — which is owned by Montreal-based Gaz Metro.

Vermont Gas refines its county pipeline plans

VERGENNES/MIDDLEBURY — At meetings in Vergennes and Middlebury last week, Vermont Gas representatives updated the public on a plan to bring a natural gas pipeline to those locales by the fall of 2015.

Don Gilbert, Vermont Gas president, said the project would bring to Addison County an energy source that is cheaper and cleaner than oil or propane. The company already provides natural gas — which can power stoves and heating and cooling systems — to more than 40,000 customers in Chittenden and Franklin counties.

Mount Abe-based heating nonprofit lands $25K grant

VERMONT — Run by student volunteers, the nonprofit Vermont Sustainable Heating Initiative, or VSHI, since 2008 has helped install more than 20 pellet stoves in low-income homes across Addison and Washington counties. And the organization’s work has not gone unnoticed.

Richard Moffi, fuel assistance chief for the state of Vermont, earlier this month allocated $25,000 to the organization, which was founded by Tom Tailer, a physics teacher at Mount Abraham Union High School. This will be enough money to provide 10-20 low-income households with pellet stoves.
