ORWELL — Andrea Ochs was 13 years old when she and her mom moved to Orwell from Queens, N.Y. She at first wasn’t sold on the Green Mountain State.

“I promised my father that if I ever woke up and looked out my window and didn’t think I lived in the most beautiful place, I would move on,” Ochs said.

“I still wake up every morning and thank God that I live in Addison County.”

MIDDLEBURY — There was a time when Peter Shumlin wasn’t sure he would make it out of high school, let alone aspire to the state’s highest office.

Shumlin, the Vermont Senate President Pro Tem, recalled being called into his elementary school principal’s office along with his parents. There, school administrators reported that young Peter wasn’t cutting it, and that perhaps he should be steered toward non-academic pursuits.

Editorial: Voters' dilemma: five good candidates and only one vote

By Angelo Lynn

In Vermont’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, the challenge voters face is two-fold: determining which candidate can best fulfill one’s own political priorities and goals, and determining which candidate has the best chance of beating Republican Brian Dubie.

ESSEX — What had been accepted for months was confirmed in June when the Vermont Secretary of State’s deadline for candidates to file petitions for public office passed: Brian Dubie is the lone Republican running for governor of Vermont.

Markowitz vies for frontrunner status

MIDDLEBURY — Deb Markowitz has had some pretty easy sailing in electoral waters since she ran successfully for Vermont Secretary of State back in 1998.

The Montpelier Democrat knows she won’t have it as easy during this election cycle, when she faces four fellow Democrats in an Aug. 24 primary before, she hopes, challenging Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie on Nov. 2.

But Markowitz is certainly not lacking in resources or confidence.

“We need someone who can win, and that’s me,” Markowitz said in an interview with the Independent this week.

Area candidates start out slow in fund-raising

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County candidates for Vermont House and Senate seats are apparently expending more shoe-leather than money thus far in their campaigns.

Phone calls to district town clerks in which there are races reveal that only a few candidates raised or spent more than the requisite $500 needed to trigger the filing of campaign finance forms by last Thursday’s deadline.

Sheldon enters Senate race

MIDDLEBURY — Incumbent Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport, will have some competition on Aug. 24 in his attempt to win a spot on the general election ballot. East Middlebury Democrat Amy Sheldon confirmed on Monday she will also seek to enter the race via a write-in campaign on primary day.

Giard, a three-term incumbent, missed the June 17 deadline for candidates to file their petition papers for federal, statewide and county offices. That means he — and any other candidate making a belated run for the Nov.

In the Democratic primary race for Lt. Governor, the candidate with a firm grasp of the legislative system, a balanced approach to problem solving and an ability to craft legislation that wins the backing of both sides of the political aisle is Rep. Chris Bray of New Haven.

Reduced burden for middle class key to Howard's Lt. gov. run

MIDDLEBURY — To say that Steve Howard entered politics at an early age would be an understatement.

The 38-year-old Rutland City Democrat was 13 years old in 1984 when he covertly campaigned for then-gubernatorial candidate Madeleine Kunin. He recalled that he had to stump slyly so as not to incur the wrath of his politically conservative dad in Rutland County — which remains one of the reddest regions in a primarily blue state.

NEW HAVEN — State Rep. Christopher Bray, D-New Haven, has been traveling around the state as a candidate for lieutenant governor and has seen a lot of things that make him happy — the Green Mountains, productive farms and active schools, to mention a few things.

But there one thing in particular that brings a smile to his face.

“There is nothing that makes me happier than to see someone with a good job,” Bray said in a recent interview with the Addison Independent.
