BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ lacrosse team on Friday broke into the win column by outlasting visiting Otter Valley, 7-5, in a defensive battle.

The Eagles improved to 1-1, while the Otters, who were playing their second game in two days, dropped to 0-3.

The game was close throughout, but Mount Abe held a slim lead most of the way. The Eagles led, 2-1, after one period, but OV fought back to tie the game at the half, 4-4. Mount Abe scored the only goal of the third period, and then earned a 2-1 edge in the fourth quarter.

ADDISON COUNTY — In area high school softball action this past weekend, Mount Abraham started the season strong with a victory, but Otter Valley fell twice.

Middlebury has yet to play its first game of the season, as it saw two more postponements: its home game vs. St. Johnsbury on Thursday and its date at Rice on Saturday.

Vergennes was idle. The Commodores are scheduled to host BFA-St. Albans on Tuesday in their season opener.

Lee Hodsden Mt Abe football coach.jpg

BRISTOL — Lee Hodsden, who assisted the Mount Abraham/Vergennes cooperative varsity program for the past five seasons and finished the 2014 season as its interim head coach, last week was named as the team’s new head coach.

Mount Abraham Co-Athletic Director Jeff Stetson said there were several candidates for the position most recently held by Ernie Senecal, who resigned during the season this past fall, but that a search committee decided Hodsden was the person for the job.

BRISTOL — For the first time since 2011, the Mount Abraham Union High School basketball program will not appear in the Division II championship game in the Barre Auditorium, and the Eagles will not win their third straight title this season despite another strong season in which they earned the No. 2 seed in Division II and tied South Burlington for the Lake Division crown.

In a Friday quarterfinal that was a rematch of the 2014 final, visiting No. 7 Fair Haven used a dominant performance on the boards to upset the Eagles, 38-31, and advance to Barre.

BRISTOL — A big lift from the bench helped the No. 2 Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team get past scrappy visiting No. 17 Hartford on Tuesday, 31-24, in a first-round Division II playoff game.

Freshman forward Emma Carter scored six of her game-high 13 points in the final 1:57 of the second quarter to help erase a Hurricane lead and forge a 16-16 halftime tie.

Also on the floor during that stretch and during the entire second half, during which the Eagles allowed just eight points, was junior guard Dani Forand, usually a reserve.

BRISTOL — Two boys’ basketball teams experiencing different seasons, Vergennes and Mount Abraham, met in the Mount Abraham Union High School gym on Tuesday, and unfortunately for the host Eagles, the trends continued.

The Commodores took control with a 22-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters, and they improved to 10-1 with a 68-20 victory.

“I like our guys,” said VUHS Coach Peter Quinn. “They have good team spirit. They pull for each other. They’re having fun, and they’re playing better.”
