Clippings: Brother shines bright on Oscar night

Posted on February 28, 2013 |
By Lee Kahrs

Lee Kahrs & brother as kids CMYK.jpg

One of my most vivid childhood memories is sitting at the kitchen counter with my little brother, John, drawing. I was perhaps nine, he a year younger, and we would each have sheets of white drawing paper and colored pencils or markers or crayons. I would often draw a bucolic barnyard scene, where the buildings were to scale but the horses and cows had elongated backs and too-short legs.

Clippings by Trent Campbell: Barely registering on cool-o-meter

Posted on February 14, 2013 |
By Trent Campbell

I like to think that sometimes, rarely, I know, but still, sometimes … sometimes a balding 49-year-old can be a little hip, a little cool. But a viewing of the 55th Annual Grammy Awards show on Sunday night left me feeling that there is no such thing as a little hip or a little cool. You’re either all the way hip or not at all. Here is a break down of the show that put me in my place.

Clippings: Considering an out-of-this-world experience

Posted on February 7, 2013 |
By John S. McCright

Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by all the stuff that gets thrown my way — school board stories, personality profiles,  obituaries, weddings and engagements, crime stories, gossip and hard news from Montpelier. All the nitty gritty details that make up the grubby lives we human beings endure on this patch of rock hurtling through space. Good grief! Occasionally a guy just wants get away from it all.

Now, thanks to the Dutch, I may just get to do that.

Clippings: Playing the role of elder statesman

Posted on January 31, 2013 |
By John Flowers

Passing the half-century mark has been full of surprises. There was that first letter from the American Association of Retired Persons, then (to my shock) the availability of a some “senior” discounts. Then, on Sunday, came my first “elder statesman” talk with our daughter, Diane.

Clippings: Obama’s speech prompts musings

Posted on January 24, 2013 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

After listening to Obama’s second inaugural address Monday, I found myself thinking about activism. In the speech, which was called “progressive” by various media outlets, the President touched on past social movements (Seneca Falls, Selma, Stonewall) and mentioned the one that — after a summer of Colorado burning non-stop, and Sandy wiping out seaside towns along the East Coast the week before the General Election — is finally holding the nation’s attention these days: the climate movement.

Clippings by Andy Kirkaldy: First the guns, then the cars ... or not

Posted on January 17, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

I’m not trying to scare business away from my good friends at Vermont Field Sports, who tell me they always see sales spike when gun control hits the news, but it’s safe to say the state’s law-abiding hunters can breathe easy. No one is coming for their rifles, or is going to pass a law that says they can’t buy newer, better ones.

That’s not really the point of the current discussion on guns — and, make no mistake about it, it’s time to talk.

Clippings: Look for wind turbines in our future

Posted on January 3, 2013 |
By John McCright

Maybe you are like me, and when you see one of those huge wind generators rising above the landscape you enjoy the beauty of the design and the good feeling of knowing the power it produces is not contributing to global warming or despoiling nature.

Or, maybe you are like me, and when you see one or many of those huge wind generators looming above the landscape you are disquieted by the fear that these industrial hulks are diminishing the pristine views of our Green Mountains and despoiling the natural habitat in which they are raised.

Clippings: Of holidays and family business

Posted on December 27, 2012 |
By Lisa Gosselin Lynn

Hush Dad, it’s Christmas… Let’s not talk business,” I whispered. It was Tuesday afternoon and wrapping paper was flying as 16 members of our extended clan tore through a pile of presents that seemed to take up most of our 850-square-foot cabin high in the Green Mountains.

Clippings: Brubeck's jazzy style was contagious

Posted on December 13, 2012 |
By Trent Campbell

It is usually a good idea to listen to your mom. Back in the ’60s and ’70s my mom was a very active volunteer with the Duluth Symphony. As an accomplished pianist and organist she was eager to keep at least one toe in the world of music while the rest of her was busy raising me and my brother and sister. She served on the symphony board and a few times a year she and my dad would break out their season tickets, get dressed up and head out for an evening of high culture. My brother and I would stay home and wreak havoc.

Clippings: Coinage ready for a big comeback

Posted on December 6, 2012 |
By John McCright

My parents dubbed me “the little miser” when I was a child growing up during the 1960s — not because I didn’t like to share, but because I was constantly clutching my piggy bank. And because we were of modest means, there wasn’t much folding money in my bank, just a handful of coins to rattle around.
