Bristol selectboard zeroes in on 2014-15 town budget

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday heard budget proposals for the landfill, solid waste and fire departments, as the board edged closer to finalizing a 2014-2015 spending plan that it will put before voters for approval in March.

Middlebury hones town budget, current plan reflects 3 percent tax increase

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Jan. 7 will attempt to further reduce a proposed 2014-2015 municipal budget of $9,223,799 that would require $6,605,869 in property tax revenue, reflecting a $240,924 increase (3 percent) compared to this year’s spending plan.

MUMS teams, teachers back in UD-3's proposed budget

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board has given its unanimous approval to a proposed 2014-2015 spending plan of $17,064,779 for Middlebury Union middle and high schools.

That is a budget that reflects an overall 2.89 percent spending increase compared to this year and allows MUMS to maintain a four-team teaching structure.

Mary Hogan sees a proposed spending hike of 4.5%

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 10 will be asked to approve a 2013-2014 Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $6,418,788, reflecting a 4.46-percent increase in spending that would preserve current programs and beef up science, technology, engineering and math instruction.

The proposed budget does not include a second-language (Spanish) program that the ID-4 school board has been discussing for the past few years. The board elected to take a pass on such a program, at an estimated cost of $144,671, in favor of a greater focus on math and sciences.

Hannaford Career Center eyes 2.8% spending hike

MIDDLEURY — Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center directors are proposing a 2013-2014 budget of $3,515,820, which represents a 2.8-percent spending increase over this year. The increase amounts to $95,639.

The budget proposal does not include any new teachers or major new initiatives and is mainly being driven by contracted salary increases and a projected 14-percent hike in health insurance premiums.

Middlebury fire department may be asked to accept fewer tax dollars

MIDDLEBURY — Town officials want to know if the Middlebury Fire Department would be willing to receive $72,000 less into its equipment savings account next year as a way of relieving stress on a tight 2013-14 municipal budget.

It was around two decades ago that Middlebury began the process of earmarking two cents on its tax rate each year to raise money for major fire equipment purchases in the future. It is a policy that has allowed Middlebury to forgo floating bond issues for the purchase of fire apparatus such as pumpers and ladder trucks.

Bristol zeros in on small hike in town tax rate

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard will likely finalize a 2013-2014 municipal budget proposal next Monday with a modest tax rate increase of around 1.1 percent, a number that Town Administrator Bill Bryant said the board felt good about presenting to voters.

Middlebury selectmen work toward town budget goal

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Monday made final its decision to increase town spending to about $8.94 million in fiscal year 2014, a move that will mean a 5.5-cent increase in the town portion of the Middlebury property tax rate to 91.86 cents

If approved by voters in March, the $8.94 million budget will mean a $55 tax hike per $100,000 of assessed value for town property owners.

Addison school board considering budget with 4% drop

ADDISON — The Addison Central School board will meet on Tuesday and could then adopt a budget proposal for the 2013-2014 school year that would drop spending over current levels by almost 4 percent.

If board members adopt the draft now before them, they would be cutting about $66,600 from the current $1.68 million budget to arrive at spending of roughly $1.61 million. The final budget proposal will need to be approved by voters.
