High schools collaborate on substance abuse, bullying programs

VERGENNES — It’s rare that scores of Mount Abraham students fill the bleachers of the Vergennes Union High School gym for something other than a basketball game.

But last Friday, hundreds of students from both high schools sat in the same set of bleachers in the VUHS gym to hear a presentation on substance abuse by motivational speaker Kevin Brooks, followed by student-led discussion forums. Meanwhile back in Bristol, students from the Vergennes and Mount Abraham middle schools gathered for workshops on bullying.

Mount Abe celebrates French culture and cuisine

BRISTOL — The location may have been rural Vermont, but the ambiance was entirely French at the Mount Abraham Union High School cafeteria last Thursday. French music piped in through the speakers, crisp, white tablecloths dressed up the cafeteria, and students gathered to converse in French over a gourmet meal prepared by chef Bill Snell of New Haven’s Tourterelle restaurant.

Mothers Without Borders' benefit work in Zambia to be presented in New Haven

Bristol Police Log: Local child injured by dog; animal exiled from Bristol

BRISTOL — On Feb. 28 Bristol police received a report from a Kountry Trailer Park resident who saw a dog belonging to another resident bite and injure a child.

Police investigated and found out that the family had taken the child to Porter Hospital, where he got 11-12 stitches in his right arm. The dog, the subject of at least two prior bite complaints, was seized for observation as it did not have a current rabies certificate.

Bristol Police Log: Police busy with assaults, drugs, thefts and traffic violations

BRISTOL — On Jan. 9 at 6:48 p.m., a Bristol police officer was attempting to locate a subject to serve legal papers, when he knocked on the door of an apartment in Bristol.

When a woman opened the door, the officer noticed a strong odor consistent with that of burnt or burning marijuana emitting from within the residence. The officer investigated and said he found that the woman, identified as Fran Meehan, 39, indeed had marijuana in the apartment, so the officer cited Meehan for possession of marijuana.

Bristol rejects firehouse bond, says OK to new police HQ

BRISTOL — When faced with two votes for expanded municipal facilities on Town Meeting Day, Bristol voters said “no” to one and “yes” to the other.

The first, for an expansion to the fire department’s North Street facility, was soundly rejected by a 587-293 tally. The second, for a police district budget that would fund renovations and a 10-year lease for a new police station at BristolWorks, passed by a narrow margin.

Sutherland to show cut-paper artwork at Walkover

BRISTOL — Pete Sutherland is well known as a folk musician and songwriter, but he is gaining recognition for his artwork in the genre of cut-paper collage. The WalkOver Gallery in Bristol will exhibit his collages from March 1-29, with an opening reception on Friday, March 8, from 5-7 p.m.

Bristol police seek 6.4% spending increase to move to BristolWorks

BRISTOL — After the hearing on a proposed firehouse expansion at Holley Hall Monday evening, few people stayed around for the public hearing on the Bristol Police Department’s proposed 2013-2014 spending plan. Those that did heard the rationale for spending a little extra to move the department into a new space at the BristolWorks business park.

Bristol dental center lands $300,000 grant

BRISTOL — A new dental center serving people of all income levels is expected to open this fall in Bristol’s revitalized industrial park, thanks to a recently announced $300,000 federal grant that will provide key funding for the longstanding effort.

Moreover, the opening of the Addison County Dental Center (ACDC) is expected to complement a concurrent effort to establish a Federally Qualified Health Center, or FQHC, at the town’s industrial park, which is gaining new momentum as BristolWorks.
