Folklife Center collects memories of Irene's impact

MIDDLEBURY — If there’s a lesson to be learned from Tropical Storm Irene, it’s that disaster makes for good stories. And not just news stories.

Middlebury-based Vermont Folklife Center is holding workshops across the state to help people record their personal memories from the flooding.

Jan Albers completes chapter as director of Sheldon Museum

MIDDLEBURY — After six years at the helm of the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, Jan Albers is ready to write the next chapter in her professional life.

Albers confirmed on Tuesday that she will be stepping down as executive director of the Sheldon — the repository of some of Addison County’s most treasured historical documents — effective this Friday, Sept. 30.

“The average stay for a museum director is five years, and I have been here for six,” Albers said with a smile.

Community backs local musician's debut work

LINCOLN — Lincoln’s Nate Gusakov has created a new kind of CSA. No, not a community supported agriculture farm, but rather a community supported album.

Born from the talents of local musicians and propelled by his community’s financial support, the 31-year-old banjo-playing singer-songwriter just released his debut solo album called “Running Clear.”

Alvarez receives state's highest arts award

WEYBRIDGE — “What has been most inspiring about Vermont is that I’ve been able to stay put here. Nothing is as good as stability for getting your work done.”

Julia Alvarez, a Weybridge writer who has also taught at Middlebury College for nearly 25 years, wrote those lines in her essay “A Vermont Writer from the Dominican Republic.”

Festival on-the-Green needs more helpers

MIDDLEBURY — For 33 years, organizers of the Middlebury Festival on-the-Green have been able to draw a steady stream of talented entertainers to the heart of Addison County’s shire town for a week of free music and family fun.

Now organizers are appealing for an infusion of new talent within their own ranks in order to keep the annual festival successful and vibrant into the future.

“We are at an energy crossroads,” said Festival on-the-Green President Gale Hurd.

Nation's poet laureate to speak at Bread Loaf

MIDDLEBURY — Poet Philip Levine mentored scores of aspiring wordsmiths during the 1980s as a faculty member of Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.

Levine, now 83, will return to the nationally renowned, 10-day conference in Ripton on Thursday, Aug. 18 — this time with a different role and some loftier credentials.

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington last Wednesday announced Levine as the nation’s new Poet Laureate for 2011-2012.

Artistry spans generations in local family

MIDDLEBURY — Some say that artistry runs in the family. If that’s true, then it may be that Weybridge resident Lisa Coale has inherited a keen artistic eye from her grandfather Richard Niebuhr of Middlebury.

Connoisseurs of art can decide for themselves — the two will have their art featured side-by-side at Otter Creek Custom Framing on Friday as part of this month’s Middlebury Arts Walk. Coale’s acrylic paintings and Niebuhr’s photography will be on display from 5-7 p.m.

Musician follows her dreams

ADDISON COUNTY — Helen Weston has always lived a life of music.

She grew up in Bristol playing more instruments than she has toes. Her parents Ken and Vivian Weston of Bristol and her five siblings all play a medley of instruments. She studied concert piano and music theory in college, and she taught music to local children at Starksboro’s Robinson Elementary School and Lincoln Community School.
