Ladies' Night Out Chorus comes to Middlebury Nov. 14

This Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., the Rutland-based Ladies Night Out Women’s Chorus will present their 8th annual concert in Middlebury at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. This year’s concert is titled “Searching for Something Greater,” with special guest Heidi Soons, a harpist with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.

Over 20 women from the Rutland area and beyond make up this women’s chorus, with Lucy Allen Tenenbaum conducting and rehearsal accompanist Lisa Knickerbocker Sears.

The King's Singers: Back by popular demand

The last time the King’s Singers — a London-based, all-male a cappella sextet — came to Middlebury, they were a hit. Actually, that’s an understatement.

The 2015 concert was scheduled to take place in Robison Hall, but it quickly sold out and was moved to Mead Chapel, where it earned a standing ovation from the crowd. Audience members requested a repeat, and after two years of organizing, spearheaded by Middlebury’s Performing Arts Series Director Allison Coyne Carroll, the King’s Singers are coming back.

Quilt exhibit opens this Friday at Northern Daughters

Northern Daughters gallery in Vergennes welcomes “Rose and Pomegranate,” a solo exhibit of quilts from Gwen Marston. The exhibition is on view at the gallery’s 221 Main Street location through Nov. 27, with an opening reception on Oct. 27, from 5-8 p.m.

Marston is a renowned quilter, author and teacher from Michigan. She has been exhibiting her liberated quiltmaking nationally and internationally for over three decades.

Gang of Thieves looks to be a show stealer in Vergennes

This Saturday, Gang of Thieves will take over the Vergennes Opera House for a Masquerade-Ball concert. This Vermont-based funk rock quartet — with heart, vision and a road-dog reputation — will stop in Vergennes on their fall tour for a special Halloween themed show. Folks of all ages are encouraged to wear costumes to help add a little Halloween flair.

Gare St. Lazare Ireland returns to Middlebury

Conor Lovett and his wife Judy Hegarty Lovett are coming back to Middlebury this weekend for their third performance at the Vermont Coffee Company Playhouse. Conor will perform extracts of two Samuel Beckett novels: “Molloy” and “Malone Dies.”

Molloy's quest to find his aged mother is interrupted by the police, a dog, the dog's owner, and Molloy's own thoughts. One of Beckett's most poignant and arresting characters.

Champlain Philharmonic returns to Middlebury with annual fall concert series

The Champlain Philharmonic will return Middlebury this Sunday, Oct. 22, to present the fall concert series of their 14th season. The day before they will perform at Green Mountain College in Poultney, 7:30 p.m. This year the program is titled “Eutierria” (meaning to belong to the good earth) featuring works that portray the connection between music, the great outdoors and Bohemian life. Middlebury’s performance will take place at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society Sanctuary, at 4 p.m.

Bringing the Outside In: On view at Bristol's Art on Main through Nov. 12

The work of three different artisans — three different ways of interacting with the natural world — will be on view at Art on Main in Bristol from Oct. 13-Nov. 12 in the new exhibit “Bringing the Outside In.” An artist reception will be open to the public on Friday, Oct. 13, from 5-7 p.m.

Susan Goldstein, Krista Cheney and Aurora Davidson all work directly with live natural materials; however, what they each do with their materials is unique to their own particular curiosity and artistic vision.

T. J. Cunningham featured this month at Edgewater Gallery

TJ Cunningham, a native of Cambridge, Vt., maintains a studio in Addison where he paints. He is the featured artist on exhibit at Edgewater Gallery on the Green in Middlebury this October. An opening reception with wine and light bites for “TJ Cunningham: At The River” will take place at the gallery on Friday, Oct. 13, 5-7 p.m. The following Saturday, Oct. 14, Cunningham will do a painting demonstration from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Jazz ensemble to perform March 20 at St. Stephen's

MIDDLEBURY — As part of St. Stephen’s Lenten Recital Series, The Middlebury Union High School Jazz Ensemble, also known as “Midd Jazz” will be performing a concert on Thursday, March 30, at 12:15 p.m. The auditioned ensemble meets daily for 40 minutes and is made up of students from grades 9-12. The ensemble has performed for 25 years at the Vermont Association for Jazz Education, placing first the past 10 years.
