Legislators consider income tax to fund public education

BRIDPORT — A proposal to use the income tax as the primary source for funding public schools was the top issue discussed by participants at the season’s first legislative breakfast, held Monday at the Bridport Grange Hall.

Local lawmakers also shared their view on the state’s new marijuana law and a plan to lower prescription drug costs, among other topics (click the links to see those stories).

Climate alert! Naturalists see global warming hurting northern species

ADDISON — The changing climate is significantly affecting northern wildlife, nationally renowned naturalist Sue Morse recently told a gathering of 30 people in Addison. The Jericho resident told stories not just of the influence of warming in Vermont, but also gave first-hand accounts of changes in the Arctic, showing striking photos of both the environment’s natural beauty and the trauma it has endured.

A hike in the minimum wage is favored

BRIDPORT — A bill in the state Senate calls for a gradual increase in the state’s minimum wage, from the current $10.50 to $15 per hour by 2022. It was the topic of some discussion among lawmakers at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast at the Bridport Grange Hall.

Rep. Fred Baser, R-Bristol, is a member of the House Ways & Means Committee, which will review the bill when/if it emerges from the Senate.

Vermonters got first-hand look at Super Bowl trophy

MONTPELIER — As football fans wait to find out this Sunday if the Patriots will bring the Super Bowl trophy back to New England, some Vermonters will rest assured that they have already gazed upon the storied Lombardi Trophy.

After the Pats beat the Atlanta Falcons in the 2017 Super Bowl — 34-28 in overtime — the Patriots organization brought the Super Bowl LI Lombardi Trophy to the Vermont Statehouse and put it on display for the public to see.

ACLU wants to shrink prison population

MONTPELIER — James Lyall says he is confident Vermont can cut its prison population in half, and he’s launching a campaign to help the state do just that.

Lyall, who is executive director of the Vermont chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, spoke at a Statehouse press conference Wednesday to announce the organization’s new initiative to reduce Vermont’s incarcerated population.

Lyall said while Vermont has made progress in getting the numbers down, more needs to be done, and at a faster pace.

MONTPELIER — Though she had to use a step stool to reach the microphone, 16-year-old Greta Solsaa wasn’t fazed by thousands of people gathered below her on the snowy Statehouse lawn this past Saturday.

“Never forget your voice,” the Rutland teen told the crowd at the March For Our Future. “Never forget that we are the future, and we have something to say about it.”

Governor proposes a lean state budget

MONTPELIER — There are no “bells and whistles” in Gov. Phil Scott’s 2019 budget, which he unveiled Tuesday.

As expected, there are also no new taxes and no new fees. Nor have any big initiatives been proposed in the budget.

Instead, the governor’s office gave the Legislature a menu of options for solving the state’s $80 million education fund gap last week in the form of a memo. A $150 million prison plan was presented as a report last week, but wasn’t mentioned in the governor’s Tuesday budget address.
