Cornwall students celebrate Farm to School grant

MONTPELIER — Seven students from Bingham Memorial School in Cornwall gathered with students and teachers from about 20 Vermont schools at the Statehouse cafeteria in Montpelier earlier this year along with legislators, government officials and Vermont Farm to School Network leaders to celebrate Farm to School Awareness Day and honor 2017 grant winners.

The Cornwall students — Sarah Tölgyesi, Molly Thalen, Lucy Goetz, Erin Sears, Miley Hansen, Ben Longman and Linc Bonner — accepted an Implementation Grant on behalf of Bingham Memorial.

Late mowing helps bobolinks thrive in state's hayfields

MONTPELIER — Summer in Vermont is greatly enriched by the state’s many grassland birds, from bobolinks flushing up from a grassy field to the beautiful song of an eastern meadowlark. But many of these species are in decline due to the loss of appropriate grassland habitat.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and Audubon Vermont are encouraging landowners to help promote these beloved species and give these birds a chance to complete their nesting season simply by altering the times of year that they mow large fields.

Fight back against ticks this summer

As Vermonters venture outside to enjoy warm summer weather, Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department reminds hikers, hunters and others to be tick smart while fishing, turkey hunting or watching birds.

According to researchers at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y., this is heralding a particularly risky year for Lyme disease and other tickborne illnesses. And the Vermont Department of Health reports that annual cases of Lyme disease continue to rise in Vermont.

New state program provides more tools to prevent spread of invasive species

MONTPELIER — Invasive species are a constant and frustrating threat to Vermont’s habitats. This spring and summer the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is encouraging the public to learn more about these invasive species and help combat their spread through a new program.

Landowners can play an important role in controlling non-native, invasive plants such as knotweed and buckthorn, while boaters and anglers can help prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species such as spiny water fleas and Asian clams.

Gov. Scott vetoes pot bill: Says he is open to some changes

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott became the first governor in the country to veto a bill that would legalize marijuana.

Scott announced Wednesday he will send the bill, S.22, back to the Legislature because the measure does not meet his requirements on a few key points.

However, the governor said he is “offering a path forward.” If lawmakers make certain changes to the legislation, he’d be willing to come around, he said.

Vermont State Police Log: Troopers issue assault citations

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police cited Addison County residents for assault in two separate incidents late last week.

On Thursday, May 18, at 4 p.m. troopers received a complaint about a citizen dispute in the Beaver Lane neighborhood of Monkton. After investigating, police came to believe that Brian Brown, 72, of Ferrisburgh arrived at the residence and was involved in a brief altercation with his tenant, a 50-year-old man.

Police cited Brown for simple assault.

Tent caterpillars expected to cause damage statewide this summer

MONTPELIER — Forest tent caterpillars have hatched, according to forest health specialists from the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. The insect is expected to cause widespread defoliation this summer, mostly in forests across northeastern and central Vermont.

Ramps are one of state's local wild edibles

The white bulbs of wild leeks, also called ramps (especially in the south), can be eaten year round, but it’s the early leaves that are most appreciated. In pre-freezer days, ramps were the first greens available after five or so months of potatoes and they were considered important as well as good tasting. Ramp festivals are still held in much of Appalachia to celebrate the arrival of this nutritious fresh food, and these tourist attractions have become so successful that in some places ramps are overharvested.
