Two years ago, I delivered my first budget address. Times were tough. We faced a budget gap of $176 million and together we made painful choices.

Welch backs gun control, laments Congressional in-fighting

MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Rep. Peter Welch on Thursday reiterated his support of President Barack Obama’s newly proposed gun control initiatives, lamented Congress’s inability to pass a comprehensive farm bill and said friction between the major parties is as bad as he has seen it in his six years in Washington.

The Vermont Democrat, during an interview with the Addison Independent, discussed these and other issues, including the nation’s financial woes.

Three colleges join forces to make bulk commodity purchases

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College is joining two other Vermont private colleges in a consortium to reduce costs associated with purchasing supplies and services common to all three institutions.

The chief financial officers of Middlebury College, Champlain College and Saint Michael’s College will direct the creation of the Green Mountain Higher Education Consortium (GMHEC). The group’s focus is to find ways to increase effectiveness and efficiency when purchasing supplies, and other business and administrative services common to all three institutions.

Telecommuters welcome spread of broadband access in Vermont

ADDISON COUNTY — While nearly all Vermonters rely on the Internet to stay on top of business, schooling or their social lives, no group is more dependent on fast, reliable Internet service than telecommuters.

“I spend most of the day connected remotely to a system that I do 99 percent of my work on,” said Addison resident Brad Clark. He’s the IT director for RetailVision, a magazine sales promotion company that last fall closed its office in Middlebury and moved out of state.

Online language education company aims to prepare kids, grow jobs

UPDATE: Vergennes police make big heroin bust in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — Vergennes and Vermont State Police on Monday arrested two Ferrisburgh men and one Cornwall man on a number of drug charges, most notably the sale of heroin.

This was the latest in a string of arrests involving the sale of heroin in Addison County.

Gov. Shumlin challenges Vermont to focus on education

MONTPELIER (AP) — Gov. Peter Shumlin devoted his second inaugural address Thursday almost entirely to education, calling for stronger high school math requirements and college tuition breaks for science, technology and math students.

“Success in the new economy depends on an educated workforce with skills beyond high school in science, computer technology, engineering and math,” the Democratic governor told a House chamber packed with lawmakers, state officials, Vermont’s congressional delegation and others.

Nationally acclaimed scientists to offer climate change insights locally

MIDDLEBURY — Climate change may have been largely absent from the national political conversation in 2012, but Addison County is kicking off the first month of 2013 with visits from nationally renowned climate change scientists. 

On Jan. 17, the public is invited to attend a presentation by Alan Betts, a Pittsford-based climate scientist who in recent years has been presenting his climate change research to diverse audiences around the state. Betts will present at the Salisbury Community School at 7 p.m.
