Law would shield farmworkers from ICE

WASHINGTON — Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., earlier this month introduced legislation to shield farmworkers from deportation and to put them on a path to earned legal status and eventual citizenship.

Regulations, future of ag top farmers' worries on statewide listening tour

VERMONT — Throughout February and March, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets held a Listening Tour to gather feedback and ideas about farming in our state. Over the course of six weeks, the agency hosted meetings in five and towns and cities, including Middlebury. More than 300 farmers and community members attended.

“The suggestions and ideas shared by participants were insightful, and covered a wide range of topics,” said Agriculture Secretary Anson Tebbetts recently.

Grants for innovative water quality projects available

COLCHESTER — The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service is seeking applications for water quality-focused conservation innovation grants in Vermont.

USDA-NRCS in Vermont will invest up to a total of $225,000 for projects that spark the development and adoption of innovative conservation technologies and approaches that address water quality. The maximum award amount for any project will not exceed $75,000 in fiscal year 2017.

State issues logging guide for landowners

MONTPELIER — Landowners considering logging on their land can now benefit from a series of simple and concise guides, designed to address the most common questions about timber harvests.

Gov. Phil Scott and Vermont Forests, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Michael Snyder recently introduced “The Landowner Guides to a Successful Timber Harvest.” These guides encourage wisely planned harvests that support forest health while maintaining or enhancing wildlife habitat, protecting water quality, and encouraging opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Vermont ranks 8th in the nation for female farmers

VERMONT — Vermont’s Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets is highlighting the important role women play in Vermont’s Ag community.

Women represent about 22.3 percent of the principal farm operators in Vermont, according to the most recent USDA agricultural census. That number is significantly greater than the national average, which is 14 percent. A “principal operator” is defined as the person overseeing the daily farm operations.

Vermont ranks 9th in the nation for percentage of principal farm operators that are women.

Study shows forest birds are on decline in Vermont

NORWICH — A 25-year study of Vermont’s forest birds, including woodpeckers, warblers and other iconic species, has documented a 14.2 percent overall population decline, raising concerns about birds and forests alike.

In one of the longest-running studies of its kind in North America, the Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE) also issued practical recommendations for landowners who may want to conserve or manage their forests for bird abundance and diversity. Vermont forests support more than 125 bird species, VCE reported, and more than 47,000 jobs in the state.

UVM opens helpline for gardeners

BURLINGTON — Gardening season is here, and help is a free phone call away for home gardeners, whether they are planning a garden, concerned about pest control or searching for suitable cultivars for their plant hardiness zone.

The University of Vermont (UVM) Extension Service has opened a helpline for calls from Vermont and northern New Hampshire gardeners four days a week. With the Master Gardener Helpline questions may be phoned in between 9 a.m. and noon, Monday through Thursday.

Public safety officials urge caution in spring hiking conditions

Vermont Gas pipeline under fire again

MONTPELIER — The Conservation Law Foundation has filed an appeal that will take Vermont Gas Systems to the state’s highest court in a fight over a 41-mile natural gas pipeline that’s already in service.

In the appeal filed April 27, the conservation group is challenging the Public Service Board’s decision not to re-evaluate the pipeline’s permit.

State brings in less tax revenue

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott’s administration says tax receipts fell by a whopping 10 percent in April.

Personal income taxes were down by $25 million in the biggest tax collection month of the year.

Susanne Young, the secretary of the Agency of Administration, says while March receipts were strong — the state was $18 million ahead of projects — the shortfall in April puts the state in the hole.
