Theme for Vergennes Memorial Day parade is announced

VERGENNES — Vergennes American Legion Post 14 announces that the theme for this year’s Memorial Day parade, to be held on Monday, May 27, will be “Honor and Remember.”

Legion Post 14 annually sponsors the two-mile parade, the largest in the state, to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of this country. This year the parade committee will be chaired by Dennis Steady, who also serves as the commander of Post 14.

High schools collaborate on substance abuse, bullying programs

VERGENNES — It’s rare that scores of Mount Abraham students fill the bleachers of the Vergennes Union High School gym for something other than a basketball game.

But last Friday, hundreds of students from both high schools sat in the same set of bleachers in the VUHS gym to hear a presentation on substance abuse by motivational speaker Kevin Brooks, followed by student-led discussion forums. Meanwhile back in Bristol, students from the Vergennes and Mount Abraham middle schools gathered for workshops on bullying.

Vergennes City Council to add a new member April 9; candidates emerge

VERGENNES — Vergennes city council members at their meeting last week said they will almost certainly fill the vacancy on the council at their April 9 meeting, and two candidates have emerged for the vacancy created when Alderman Bill Benton won a race for mayor on March 5.

City Council eyes $1.45 million bond for new city police HQ

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen moved close on Tuesday to setting a May vote on a $1.45 million bond to pay for a 4,611-square-foot North Main Street police station.

That plan would remove more than 1,300 square feet — a drive-in evidence processing area, offices for the force’s sergeant and detective, and fitness and intake/dispatch rooms — from the proposed $1.85 million, 5,940-square-foot station that Vergennes voters defeated on Town Meeting Day, 302-292. It would remain on the same site.

Homeless women work together to serve Vermont troops

VERGENNES — The residents of the John Graham Emergency Shelter in Vergennes know what it’s like to be without a home.

Maybe that’s why it didn’t take long for the shelter’s newly formed women’s group to zero in on the men and women who are serving in the military far away from their homes as the subject for a community service project.

Vergennes youth wrestlers are seeing success

MILTON — Ten Vergennes Area Youth Wrestling Club members won titles this past weekend at a Milton tournament as what club organizers said has been a successful season for the organization continued.

Club membership has grown to 53, and 46 wrestlers competed this past weekend at Milton. There, the team also won the tournament’s sportsmanship award, as voted by the event’s referees and other competing clubs.

As well as the 10 first-place finishes at Milton, Vergennes youth wrestlers earned nine second-place results and 14 third-place showings.

Vermont principals vote Guyette into Hall of Fame

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Principals’ Association announced in February that longtime Vergennes Union High School employee Vincent “Roland” Guyette will be among the Class of 2013 inductees into the VPA Hall of Fame.

According to the VPA press release, Guyette was chosen because he“Served VUHS students for over 30 years as coach, AD, and mentor.”

Vergennes to review smaller police station proposal

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday will look at a proposal for a smaller new North Main Street police station, and City Manager Mel Hawley said this week that they could act quickly to schedule another vote on the issue.

City residents on Town Meeting Day rejected a $1.85 million bond to pay for a 5,940-square-foot station on the 0.75-acre former Vergennes Auto Sales parcel by a slim margin, 302-292.

Vergennes police officers lauded

VERGENNES — Four members of the Vergennes Police Department were honored on Feb. 26 in front of the entire department, family members and the Vergennes City Council.

Detective Jason Ouellette received two awards from Chief George Merkel, while Officers Brent Newton and William Wager received one apiece. Merkel was also honored by City Manager Mel Hawley on behalf of the New York Police Department.
