Fireworks and concert are set for July 3rd in Vergennes

VERGENNES — The Fraternal Order of the Eagles No. 3801 and the Vergennes American Legion Post No. 14 will co-sponsor a fireworks display at the Vergennes Union High School athletics fields on Monday, July 3, beginning at dusk.

Prior to the fireworks, the public is invited to come and enjoy music provided by the Vergennes City Band, directed by Susan O’Daniel. Refreshments will be available from food vendors, and the Vergennes Fire Department will be on site to keep everything safe.

Local Lions distribute donated eyeglasses

VERGENNES — From July 2016 to June 2017 Vermont Lions Club members have been quietly collecting eyeglasses from the public and stashing them away in the basement of Vergennes Lion Brad Howe, the chairmen of the effort. 

On June 14, under Howe’s direction, members of the Vermont clubs delivered about 15,000 pairs of eyeglasses to the New Jersey Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC) in West Trenton, N.J. More than 3,000 of those glasses were from the Lions Club donation boxes in Brandon, Middlebury and Vergennes.

VERGENNES — In an era when many brick-and-mortar businesses are trying to create an Internet presence, a year-old Vergennes venture is working to reverse that trend — with help from an online fundraising site.

City couple Mona and Jon Sullivan has been operating their online local-food business, Provisionary, out of a 400-square-foot space at 7 South Maple St., just off Main Street.

City board to rule on Green Street development in July

VERGENNES — After an April site visit and a three-session public hearing that closed on Monday, the Vergennes Development Review Board will decide next month whether to approve a six-unit Planned Unit Development at 186 Green St. that would feature small, energy-efficient pre-built homes and common-owned land on 1.85 acres.

Vergennes Police Log: City man accused of aggravated domestic assault

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Sunday, June 18, arrested a city man for aggravated domestic assault after responding to a complaint about a city apartment. They lodged Russell Hulst, 57, at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility following the alleged attack.

Police allege Hulst pushed the victim to the floor and leaned on her throat with his right forearm in the presence of her daughter, and said he was scheduled to be arraigned this past Monday.

Vergennes sewer-rate hike likely

VERGENNES — At its June 13 meeting the Vergennes City Council discussed a proposed 2017-2018 sewer budget and the higher rates that might be needed to support sewer spending.

City Manager Mel Hawley said on Wednesday they did not make a final decision on either, but it appears a second rate increase after one in 2016 could be inevitable. However, that increase would also be just the second since 2006.

After 48 years in the classroom and on the sports fields, VUES teacher to retire

VERGENNES — In his soon-to-end 48 years at Vergennes Union Elementary School, mostly spent teaching 5th- and 6th-grade social studies, Joe Samaritoni has enjoyed plenty of what he calls “aha moments,” coached and refereed countless youth soccer and basketball games, and resisted the advice of many to join the ranks of administrators.

VUHS social studies teacher Pam Taylor reflects on 43 years in front of the classroom

VERGENNES — A teacher inside a one-room Ira schoolhouse who taught eight grades within its walls sparked one of its 1964 graduates to follow in her footsteps.

Fifty-three years later, the past 43 of those spent teaching social studies and some English classes at Vergennes Union High School, that former Ira Central School student — Pam Taylor — is ready to step away and spend more time reading, painting, playing music, relaxing in her North Ferrisburgh home, and traveling.

Vergennes Boys and Girls Club to be open for meals this summer

VERGENNES — The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vergennes will be an Open Meal site for breakfast and lunch this summer. The club is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Meals will be provided, at a first come, first serve basis, at the following sites and times:

City partnership sets goals to improve Vergennes

VERGENNES — Efforts to enhance the economic viability and preserve the beauty and character of downtown Vergennes took center stage at the annual meeting of the Vergennes Partnership, held June 1 at Falls Park on the banks of Otter Creek.

Partnership President Renny Perry and others updated the more than a dozen people in attendance that the three-minute video promoting Vergennes and its environs has been viewed 14,000 times from the Vermont Department of Tourism Facebook page, which shared the video after it was released last month.
