Dickerson sports col bw Banff.jpg

I first visited Banff National Park in 1985. I was 22, traveling with my parents, an older brother and his wife and two-year-old daughter, and one younger brother. We were working our way down the Rockies from a family reunion in British Columbia to the wedding in Boulder, Colo., of our other brother.

Sports column by Karl Lindholm: Impossible Dream II – Red Sox surprise fans everywhere

Posted on September 26, 2013 |
By Karl Lindholm

It happened once before, a long time ago.

In the summer of 1966, the Red Sox were a bad team. They finished in ninth place with 72 wins and 90 losses, 26 games behind Baltimore, who won the AL pennant and then swept the Dodgers in the Series.

The following year, as many will recall, was the so-called “Impossible Dream” season. With new manager Dick Williams barking orders and Carl Yastrzemski playing out of his mind, the Red Sox were 92-70, won the AL pennant, and took the Cards to seven games in the World Series.

Sports column by Matt Dickerson: The life of a Vermont game warden

Posted on September 19, 2013 |
By Matt Dickerson

When New Haven native Wes Butler graduated in 2010 from Paul Smith’s College, he had no intention of becoming a game warden. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fish and wildlife science in order to become a wildlife biologist. He concentrated on the wildlife half rather than the fisheries half for fear that a career in fisheries might spoil his lifelong passion for angling. But the most important thing was to be on the biology side of management, and not on the law enforcement side.

Sports column by Matt Dickerson: Outdoors matters

Posted on September 5, 2013 |
By Matt Dickerson

It’s Tuesday morning, the day after Labor Day. Classes won’t start in earnest at Middlebury College for another six days. Today, however, is the first full day of activities for first-year students who arrived on campus yesterday. So here I am at a reception, carrying out my role as faculty member introducing myself to parents of these new students. I sip coffee and make conversation, sometimes asking questions, sometimes answering them, and sometimes just listening to nervous banter while trying to be reassuring and friendly.

Sports column by Karl Lindholm: Elvis has left the building

That’s right, I’m outtahere.

I’m already in Africa, where I will spend the next year.

Africa! How about that! — Cameroon, to be precise. Me. Africa. Imagine.

I’m just about the most provincial person I know. A trip to Burlington for me is a big deal. I have traveled much in Addison County. I am one comforted by routine and familiarity.

I teach a course at Middlebury on the literature and culture of Northern New England, which is essentially an examination of the Yankee archetype. I use myself as Exhibit A.

Sports column by Andy Kirkaldy: Ultimately, gray matter makes the difference

Posted on August 15, 2013 |

So, what is the most important part of the body for an athlete?

The torso, for core strength?

The hands, so vital in virtually every sport except soccer?

The legs, critical for mobility, balance and speed?

Well, no, the answer is pretty obvious: the brain.

Sure, without generous helpings of strength, hand-to-eye coordination, quickness, agility, balance or some combination of a majority of those traits, an athlete will not excel.

Sports column by Matt Dickerson: The Haunting – some big fish tales

Posted on August 8, 2013 |
By Matt Dickerson

Norman Maclean ends his novella “A River Runs Through It” with a sentence at once both simple and profound: “I am haunted by waters.”

There are times I know what he means. Most of the time, though, I am haunted by fish. Not by fish in general, but by specific fish in particular places. And without exception, they are fish I have not caught.

You figured their kids would be good athletes, but it took them a while to get together.

She said that was his fault. “I had to give him an ultimatum.” He sees it differently, “It took her a long time to see that I had a couple of things going for me.”

Sue Parsons was a junior at Middlebury when she started dating Bobby Ritter, a senior. That was 1982. They were married nine years later.
