Excuses by the pounds: Alaska, Vol. II

Posted on August 25, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

There was a time when the promise of air travel was exciting to me. Those days are long gone; any remnant of enthusiasm came to an end 10 years ago this September. Still, despite the hassles of modern day flight, business trips to the right places do occasionally offer an excuse to do some fishing.

Why slam a sport that offers a chance to excel?

Posted on August 18, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

The venerable sport of football ... OK, I’ll cave in and call it soccer, if for nothing else than the sake of clarity ... has generated a lot of buzz this summer, even in this nation, where football means helmets, pads and concussions, not shin guards, shorts and dramatic embellishments of minor infractions.

Three salmon and a ten-year-old girl

Posted on August 11, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

“Excuse me,” the woman said, coming up out of nowhere and addressing my 18-year-old son, Mark, as I knelt beside him on the edge of the river removing a large fish hook from the ankle-cuff of his waders. “Did you know that there was a fly stuck to you while you were fishing?”

Grass skirts, 'Grins & Lies,' baseball clowns

Posted on August 4, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

Imagine: black men, barefoot, wearing grass skirts, shirtless, with war-painted faces, uttering gibberish, affecting a crude stereotype of African tribesmen, straight out of Tarzan movies. These were the Zulu Cannibal Giants, African-American baseball players in the 1930s, making a living, clowning, barnstorming the country, delighting white patrons.

Later, this team evolved into the Ethiopian Clowns, and finally the Indianapolis Clowns. The Clowns were a powerful force in black baseball from 1935 to the mid-1950s.

Instant replay might work for outdoor sports

Posted on July 28, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

On Tuesday night the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 19 innings. On Wednesday morning I saw a replay of the game-winning run, scored by Julio Lugo.

It was a run that shouldn’t have counted, as video replays and photographs show Pirates catcher Michael McKenry tagging Lugo well before he reached home plate. But the ump blew the call, and the Braves won. And that of course once again brought up cries from fans as well as players and managers for an increased use of instant replay in baseball.

Cup final once again proves soccer unique

Posted on July 21, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Once again, we learned that what the rest of the world calls football is a fickle sport.

In the championship game of the World Cup for women’s soccer, the American team had more than a dozen chances to score, but converted just twice — although both were sensational goals.

The first came courtesy of player of the match (just one observer’s opinion) Alex Morgan. It came on her lethal left-footed strike after Morgan beat her defender to Megan Rapinoe’s beautifully struck long ball into Japan’s end.

Fisherman must make adjustments

Posted on July 14, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

Life sometimes requires making adjustments.

So does fishing. Some of the adjustments are small. Some less small. But large or small, a failure to adjust can result, well, in failure.

Yesterday morning, the second to last day of family vacation in Maine, I headed out to spend a couple hours fishing a nearby stream. It is a stream I know well, and have fished dozens of times over the past 35 years.

L-screens, old jocks, denial

Posted on July 7, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

I love the L-screen.

It makes me feel years younger. I am always on the lookout for ways to feel younger these days. I have a bad case of Old Jock Syndrome.

The L-screen is a simple concept: It’s netting on an aluminum frame shaped like a fat “L.” It has revolutionized batting practice in baseball.

A fine and twisting thread

Posted on June 30, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

I took my son Mark to play in a baseball game in Burlington last week. Turns out the game was canceled because of rain, but we never got word until we were already at the Burlington High School field. So I found myself with a little extra time to spend in the big city. And, not wanting two hours of driving to be completely wasted, I stopped by a fly shop to buy some fly-tying supplies.

School year had success, memories

Posted on June 23, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

On Monday morning Otter Valley baseball coach Tim Mitchell and I were trying to puzzle out why OV players are assigned to the Rutland American Legion baseball team and not to Addison County’s, especially given that Rutland is already drawing players from as far away as Manchester.

We decided that as long as athletes are playing somewhere at all we wouldn’t worry too much about it.
