Panther skipper is Coach and Mom of the Year

Posted on June 9, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

Kelly Bevere — Coach of the Year. It rhymes.

Kelly Bevere — Mom of the Year. That also works.

Kelly’s Middlebury College softball team won 26 regular season games this spring, swept through the NESCAC tournament undefeated (3-0), and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Just a couple weeks later, she gave birth to Owen, a slugger, born on May 27, weighing in at nine pounds 15 ounces.

A ragged fly on a flooded river

Posted on June 2, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

I don’t usually get excited about catching a nine-inch trout. At least not when the trout was almost certainly a stocked fish, and I’m fishing a favorite stretch of my home river where I’ve already caught 1,000 trout in my lifetime.

But this was different for two reasons.

Time for rules to be altered or abandoned

Posted on May 26, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Some proposed rule changes intended to improve sports can be charitably dismissed as well-meaning, but misguided.

Periodically, for example, someone suggest raising the height of the basketball hoop to decrease the advantage enjoyed by taller players. Most recently, several other commenters on Charlie Pierce’s boston.com blog had to disabuse an otherwise intelligent fellow poster of that notion.

High waters delay state stocking efforts

Posted on May 19, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

I was driving one of my sons to one of his many activities on Monday evening. The thunder I’d heard in the afternoon was no long rumbling, and the rain had subsided from pounding to merely steady. As we crossed the one-lane bridge on Route 116, I glanced down at the New Haven River. It was swollen and murky — too high to invite fishing — but not quite at flood stage. I was surprised. Despite the tapering off of the rain, I’d been expecting the water to be even higher.

Pay homage to the count of baseball

Posted on May 12, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

ONE, TWO balls; ONE, TWO strikes. ONE out. ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX innings. I love to count!

Just about my favorite Sesame Street puppet was the Count, dressed as he was in his black cape, ticking off numbers in his thick Transylvanian accent. He helped all four of my children learn to count.

I think the Count could also help young baseball players learn the game.

Of ospreys and teens in 'wild' Florida

Posted on April 21, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

We all know of “wild” animals particularly adapted to human-made environments. Consider black bears in Adirondack state parks, deer in New Jersey suburbs, pigeons in the city and the ubiquitous raccoons. This winter an opossum was living in our woodpile until the pile got too low, and then it moved into our garage.

This past week I had an opportunity to witness another example, though one somewhat more surprising (at least to me).

A man with a message: 'play ball'

Posted on April 14, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

Charlie is the Messenger — and the message is “Play Ball! Have Fun!”

He loves baseball, knows the game, wants to see it played right, enjoys teaching kids the skills required to play the game. He’s effective at explaining the game’s complicated strategy and structure.

Otter Creek Classic returns

Posted on April 7, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

Cold, high water. Slow fishing. That’s my prediction for the opening day of the 2011 trout fishing season.

OK, I admit it. It’s my prediction every year for opening day. I’m not going out on a limb. Still, the last couple years may have left anglers somewhat spoiled. On opening day of 2010, there was much less runoff from snow melt than is typical for early April, and thus much better opening day conditions than usual.

Thoughts as many seasons blend together

Posted on March 31, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

We all have personal markers for the arrival of spring.

Mine include seeing Middlebury College baseball and softball scores show up from Florida or Arizona against schools I’ve never heard of, (McHenry County?), trash-talking at our annual fantasy baseball draft, (it did not go unremarked-upon that our defending champ bought non-Cy Young candidates Doug Fister, Vin Mazzaro and David Pauley), and second-guessing winter high school all-star teams (no Carl Leduc on the boys’ Lake Division stars, and no Tiger skaters on the Free Pressteams?)

Amateur wildlife photographer goes extra mile

Posted on March 24, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

“It was all the dog’s fault,” explains E.J. “Eli” Elithorpe, from the living room of his Bristol home attached to his chainsaw business, White Rock Sport. He got a new Akita accustomed to long walks on a leash. As they’d walk, Eli would hear interesting birdcalls and wonder what the birds were. He began carrying his binoculars.
