Rep. Will Stevens to step down after eight years in Statehouse

SHOREHAM — Expressing a desire to “recharge his batteries” and devote more time to the family farm, Rep. Will Stevens, I-Shoreham, announced this week that he will not seek a fifth consecutive two-year term in the Vermont House.

Pipeline plan gets frosty reception

Others recited poems and prayers.

Whiskey maker gets Act 250 permit for Shoreham distillery

SHOREHAM — The District 9 Environmental Commission on Monday issued an Act 250 permit to WhistlePig LLC to build a rye whiskey distillery and related infrastructure off Quiet Valley Road in Shoreham, a decision that comes after a lengthy and at-times bruising battle between the applicants and neighbors of the budding new enterprise.

The permit specifically allows WhistlePig to make the following additions to the 467-acre farm, owned by company founder Raj Peter Bhakta:

Shoreham considers solar power co-op

SHOREHAM — A Shoreham couple is trying to organize a local “community-owned solar cooperative” through which residents could become investors. The payoff for investors, they say, would be net-metering credits applied against their monthly electric utility bills.

Pheasants killed in fire, two buildings destroyed

SHOREHAM — A New Year’s Day fire at a Shoreham animal preserve claimed more than a hundred pheasants, though no people were hurt.

Glenn and Judy Symon own and run the ringneck pheasant preserve, known as the Peaceable Hill Preserve, where a fire broke out in two buildings at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

WhistlePig releases its newest top-end whiskey

SHOREHAM — WhistlePig Whiskey of Shoreham last month introduced The Boss Hog series, a unique version of its whiskey that will be released each year. Company officials said this represents the finest and most unique rye in WhistlePig’s barrel barns.

The Boss Hog is a pure barrel strength, 100 percent single grain, straight rye whiskey, comprised of whiskey from one of only 24 of WhistlePig’s oldest and most unique barrels. Company officials said it is not for the uninitiated or the faint of heart.

Cyclists injured in Tour de Farms are mending, will receive new bikes

SHOREHAM — Martin Veit and Sophie Gerry were both active cyclists until a fateful day this past fall in Shoreham when an allegedly drunken driver knocked them off their bikes and onto a long road to recovery. Neither of the two unrelated bikers have gotten back into the cycling saddle since the sixth annual Tour de Farms back on Sept. 15, when police say Brian E. Miller, 54, struck the pair as they were riding along Route 74 west of Shoreham village.

Ortuno succeeds Douglas as Shoreham town clerk

SHOREHAM — The town of Shoreham welcomes a new town clerk this week.

Incumbent Clerk Amy Douglas decided to step down, effective Nov. 29, after approximately five years of service. The selectboard has appointed resident Julie Ortuno to take Douglas’ place until the Town Meeting Day elections next March.

Douglas said she has simply decided to retire.

“I really enjoyed it,” she said of the job. “I just decided that now was the time (to retire).”

USDA, state programs benefit local farms

SHOREHAM — As anyone in Addison County knows, farming isn’t easy, especially for farmers who are new to the business. But a litany of USDA programs can help farmers get on their feet. In total, the Rural Development division of the USDA pumps $5 million-$10 million annually into Addison County, investing in farms, businesses and communities, according to Ted Brady, state director of the Vermont and New Hampshire Rural Development program of the USDA.
