ORWELL — Early Wednesday morning, school boards in the Addison Rutland Supervisory Union (ARSU) and representatives of the district’s teachers’ union reached a tentative contract agreement, averting a threatened teachers’ strike that day.

Orwell Village School board chair Glen Cousineau, who said both sides agreed to keep details of the agreement private until it is ratified, was relieved by the breakthrough.

ORWELL — Contract negotiations in the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union are coming down to the wire, as teachers in that district announced on Friday that they would strike if school boards do not return to the table and reach a settlement by Wednesday.

Teachers in ARSU, which includes Orwell, Benson, Castleton and Fair Haven, have been working without a contract since July 2011 and are in the 15th month of negotiations on a new contract, having so far failed to reach a compromise. The supervisory union has imposed a pay freeze.

By Andrea Suozzo

ORWELL — This Town Meeting Day, voters in Orwell will decide on a proposed 2012-13 elementary school spending plan that represents a 5.47 percent increase over the 2011-12 budget.

Like many proposed school budgets around the state, Orwell’s plan adds back many vital services that were cut due to the state’s Challenge for Change budget recommendations last year, according to Orwell Village School Board chair Glen Cousineau. The additional spending is necessary to maintain a high quality of education at the Orwell Village School, he added.

ORWELL — Michael B. King’s music ranges from blues to rock to reggae, but these days it’s taken on a different theme: Many of his new songs are about mothers and their children.

The 55-year-old Orwell resident spread his own mother’s ashes this past summer, around the same time that his band, The Jesters, broke up after an 18-year run. Both milestones made him step back and think about his next project.

“I knew I had to replace my music with something,” he said.

ORWELL — In a barn at the Hall and Breen Farm on Monday morning, two lines of cows jostled for position, eager to enter the single-cow berths where they’d be rewarded with troughs of grain.

On the other side of the berths, Louis Hall and two maintenance workers watched as the robotic arms grasped each cow’s udders, milked, then released. As a cow left the stall, she pushed aside a bar that allowed the next cow to enter.

Editor’s note: A year ago this week, a New Jersey family was traveling through Addison County when car problems forced an unexpected stopover. It may be unsurprising to locals how the “flatlanders” were treated here, but it is interesting and enlightening to see ourselves in the eyes of our visitors. This is their story in the words of the New Jersey man who found himself stranded on Christmas Eve.

Orwell school board gears up for deep budget cuts

ORWELL — Across the state, schools are examining their budgets in the wake of the Legislature’s Challenges for Change recommendations. As school boards sit down for discussions, some — like in Orwell — are finding that they’ll have to sharpen the knife even more than originally projected.

“It’s a very tight year,” said Glen Cousineau, chair of the Orwell Village School board, which will be looking to reduce the school’s spending by approximately 10 percent.
