Clippings: New bridge not as great as grandpa

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

This past Saturday marked my grandpa’s 80th birthday. Born just shy of Halloween, my grandpa, James Hilmes — or Jim, before I knew him — celebrated his big day in Hays, Kan., surrounded by my extended family.

Around the bend: The squeaky wheel gets the BaNilla

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

The woman standing next to me in the dairy aisle didn’t share my enthusiasm.

She seemed not to understand she was witnessing one of my greatest personal triumphs.
She did not congratulate me; in fact, she told me not to hug her ever again.

She didn’t care that there, on the bottom shelf next to the butter, lay proof that my voice had been heard.

Stonyfield had listened to me.

Yes, this is a tale of yogurt and the power of free speech, two things I’m in favor of but rarely think about simultaneously. Through my input, I effected meaningful change in the yogurt industry.

Politically Thinking: State elections still too close to call

Posted on October 28, 2010 |
By Eric L. Davis

Many questions about the Vermont elections remain unsettled in the final week of the campaign.

Peter Welch and Patrick Leahy will be returned to the House and Senate by substantial margins. But will Democrats Welch and Leahy be members of the majority or the minority party when the 112th Congress convenes in January? Welch is likely to be in the minority in the House, while enough of Leahy’s Senate Democratic colleagues should be re-elected that he will continue in the majority.

Clippings: Campaign spending obscenely high

Posted on October 28, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

Who could blame the electorate for thinking the people running to represent them in government are stinking, money-grubbing pigs? Election after election the amount of money candidates spend in their campaigns grows and grows, at a rate surely much faster than inflation.

According to the Vermont Secretary of State’s website, Republican Horace F. Graham spent the whopping sum of $28.15 to fend off a Democrat, a Progressive and a Prohibition Party candidate to win the Vermont governor’s race in 1916. Things have changed.

Politically Thinking: Progressive party losing its clout

Posted on October 14, 2010 |
By Eric L. Davis

Vermont’s Progressive Party may not be able to maintain its major party status for the 2011-12 biennium. State election law defines a “major political party” as one that has a local committee in at least 15 towns or cities, and has received at least 5 percent of the vote for one of the six statewide offices.

Major parties are allowed to nominate their candidates through primary elections. Several media organizations, such as Vermont Public Radio, also use major party status as the criterion for deciding which candidates to invite to participate in broadcast debates.

Between the Lines: 350.org and social media activism

Posted on October 14, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

Almost every day at Middlebury College, I receive an influx of e-mails announcing the latest environmental initiatives and encouraging students to make their voices heard.

Last weekend, climate change activism took the global stage by storm with the 10/10/10 Global Work Party organized by 350.org. The group inspired a groundbreaking 7,347 events across 188 countries. With such broad-based support, the case for change seems fairly clear: People are demanding a global transition towards a clean energy economy.

Clippings: Graduation day arriving too soon

Posted on October 14, 2010 |
By John Flowers

I’m 48 and I’m not quite ready to graduate from high school.

No, I’m not a perennial flunk-out artist, nor am I an old-timer seeking to complete an education suspended years ago.

Rather, I am a parent of a high school senior — the last in our household — scheduled to earn his diploma next spring. The stark reality of that momentous occasion just dawned on me this month, and I selfishly wish graduation day weren’t so imminent.

Clippings: Bluegrass concert spurs despair

Posted on October 7, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

If you didn’t attend the Abigail Washburn concert at the college’s Center for the Arts last week, well, you missed out.

Unfortunately, my imagination didn’t miss out — the concert sent me spiraling into new waves of depression about my non-musicality.

Around the bend: Staying warm is winter's challenge

Posted on October 7, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

Here we are, just one week into October, and my brain has already slipped into winter mode. For the next six to eight months, at least 40 percent of my waking thoughts will focus one elusive goal: staying warm.

I’m one of those people who are always cold. You know the type; every household has one. We scream, “Close the door!” the second it opens, before our family members have time to go through it. We wear socks 11 months of the year. We think the inventor of the Snuggie deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for humanitarianism.

Clippings: Small steps toward peace add up

Posted on September 30, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

The planet probably needs the United Nations’ International Day of Peace for the same reasons we need Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

In the latter case, as any parent will tell you, all the other days are children’s days.

In the case of the International Day of Peace — which occurs every year on Sept. 21 — it sure seems like the people of Earth devote the other 364 days to violence and war.
