Around the bend: Dream leads to big lottery 'jackpot'

Posted on January 27, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Guess what: I won the lottery.

I never thought it would happen to me. I don’t win at games of chance. I’m not one of those charmed people who spend $50 a week on scratch tickets and score a $1,500 jackpot every decade or so. I just don’t have that kind of luck.

I’m amazed I actually won. But what’s even more incredible is that I knew it was going to happen. The numbers came to me in a dream.

Clippings: School testing results can mislead

Posted on January 20, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

School testing seems to be in the news constantly, partly thanks to the “No Child Left Behind” act — NCLB, pronounced as nickel-bee by anyone who works in or covers schools, or works on laws that affect them.

There are a few things the general public should, but may not in all cases, know about tests. First, most probably know they measure students’ knowledge in the core subjects of language, math and science.

Something many may not know is that tests do OK at evaluating students’ grasp of core content.

Between the Lines: The tracks of John Boehner's tears

Posted on January 20, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

Pity the poor liberals. They spent decades convincing Americans that it was a good thing for women to be strong, high-profile leaders. So who comes along and grabs the mantle of the high-profile political woman? Not a liberal, but the dreaded Sarah Palin.

Then after years of creating space for men to be more in touch with their feelings, liberals have to watch new Speaker of the House John Boehner — he of the tough-guy politics and country club demeanor — become the most emotive man in public life.

It’s enough to make progressives want to go out and burn a bra.

Politically Thinking: State economy shifting with times

Posted on January 20, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

Last week, the Legislature’s consulting economist, Tom Kavet, presented his semi-annual revenue forecast and analysis of the Vermont economy to Gov. Shumlin and legislative leaders. Kavet’s reports are important events in Montpelier, because they identify issues that are likely to be on the Legislature’s agenda in the next session.

Clippings: New efforts bring risks and lessons

Posted on January 13, 2011 |
By J.P. Allen

Before this December, my mother knew very little about Shakespeare — and almost certainly not enough to teach Shakespeare.

She was forced to confront the Bard by the will of a higher power. The faculty at Centre College, in my hometown of Danville, Ky., had decided it was her turn to teach Humanities 101, a year-long whirlwind introduction to the Western literary and cultural canon.

Around the bend: A new year brings hibernation time

Posted on January 13, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

I’m not opposed to New Year’s resolutions. I just don’t think Jan. 1 is a good time to start anything that requires self-motivation.

In Vermont, the deepest part of winter is just beginning. People may feel obligated to make New Year’s resolutions to exercise and lose weight and get organized, but right now all anyone really wants to do is curl up on the couch and eat. Anything. With extra butter.

Even my cat gets fat in January.

Clippings: 20-somethings on the launch pad

Posted on January 6, 2011 |
By Ellie Moore

“Honey, listen,” my father says, “you and your brother are 99 percent likely to give back to society. But there’s always that 1 percent, and you’ve got some artistic tendencies.”

This was a motivational speech given to me the summer after my junior year of college.

Politically Thinking: Left may challenge Shumlin budget

Posted on January 6, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

Gov. Shumlin will submit his proposed budget for fiscal year 2012 to the Legislature at the end of January. Opposition to Shumlin’s budget may be more intense among progressives than among Republicans.

The Republicans are too weak to be a major force in Montpelier. They hold fewer than one-third of the seats in the House and the Senate. The senior Republican, Lt. Gov. Phil Scott, has made it clear that he does not see his role as leading the opposition to Shumlin.

Between the Lines: Shaking off the January blues

Posted on January 6, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s right about this time of year that some of us begin to wonder why we ever thought it was a good idea to live in Vermont in the first place: Two weeks after Christmas and three more months of wintry weather to come.

Couldn’t God have just skipped January (and maybe November) and given us only the shocking green of spring, the lazy warmth of summer, and the gold of autumn?

Sure, we’ll take a few weeks of late winter thrown in there for good measure, complete with longer days and fresh maple syrup.

But as for January? A lot of us would just as soon hit the fast-forward button.

Clippings: Happy greetings from a gruff codger

Posted on December 30, 2010 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

“Have a happy, happy!”

The emphasis was always on the second “happy” and it was said, back in the mid-’70s, by my climbing buddy’s dad. He loved saying it, as if it were his own contribution to the nation’s lexicon — “Have a happy, happy!”

It was a New Year’s Day greeting, of course, although Lou said it throughout the year whenever the mood struck him, which wasn’t, by the way, that often.
