Politically Thinking by Eric Davis: Same-sex marriage ruling in the works

Posted on December 13, 2012 |
By Eric Davis

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in the spring in two same-sex marriage cases. The first involves the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8, the referendum that overturned a California Supreme Court decision making same-sex marriages legal in that state. The second, which could have significant implications for Vermont, involves the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, the 1996 federal statute that defines marriage in terms of federal law as the legal union of one man and one woman.

Between the Lines: Christmas for Christians - and Jews, too?

Posted on December 13, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

Is Christmas a Christian holiday?

Maybe the people who keep urging us to put the Christ back in Christmas have a point. At a time when a growing number of Americans identify with no religious institution, we’ve lost much of the holiday’s religious value.

But many historians believe the historical Jesus was born in the spring. The timing and some of the rituals of modern-day Christmas (e.g., the tree hauled in from the forest) appropriate pagan, solstice celebrations for the purposes of the dominant religious paradigm of our time.

Clippings: Coinage ready for a big comeback

Posted on December 6, 2012 |
By John McCright

My parents dubbed me “the little miser” when I was a child growing up during the 1960s — not because I didn’t like to share, but because I was constantly clutching my piggy bank. And because we were of modest means, there wasn’t much folding money in my bank, just a handful of coins to rattle around.

Around the bend: Christmas tunes bring cheer – really

Posted on December 6, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen — sure, they’re the most popular baby names of 2012. But they’re also the names of the flying reindeer made famous in that classic Christmas poem — and song. I love that song.

Actually, I love all Christmas music, and I’ve already started listening. It feels like ages since I heard about wassailing, figgy pudding, French hens and other things that don’t really exist.

Clippings: One reporter aims to shop local

Posted on November 29, 2012 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

I had heard of two holidays that took place over the last week: the traditional one, Thanksgiving, and the unofficial one, Black Friday. So imagine my surprise when I opened my computer this Monday morning and found a barrage of emails in my inbox informing me of a third special occasion: Cyber Monday.

Politically thinking: Obama very strong in ‘bubbles'

Posted on November 29, 2012 |
By Eric Davis

Election results released by the Secretary of State’s office show that President Obama won eight communities in Vermont with more than 80 percent of the vote. His best town was Norwich, with 85 percent. The other places on the list are Marlboro, Putney, Brattleboro, Burlington, Montpelier, Strafford and Granville. Middlebury and Ripton, with 78 and 79 percent for Obama, came close to being on the list, but did not quite make the elite league.

Between The Lines: Kitchen confidential and the eating season

Posted on November 29, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

Tis the season for eating. And therefore, tis also the season for cooking.

I can’t help but notice that my favorite cooks (i.e., anyone willing to make me a meal) have particularly strong preferences when it comes to how things are done in their kitchen.

A kindly woman can turn ferocious when guarding her kitchen. Not even a glass of water may be filled within the confines of her kingdom without permission, lest the wrong glass be filled or water be drawn from the tap when there’s filtered water on hand.

Clippings: Job creation not exactly Job One

Posted on November 21, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

The impending demise of Hostess Brands Inc. is good for a few cheap laughs.

To start with, Hostess’s signature product, the Twinkie, is inherently funny. It has been theorized that only rats, cockroaches and Twinkies would survive the end of the world as we know it. My niece Carrie forwarded a George Takei tidbit about a looming December prediction of doom and noted the timing of Twinkies’ demise: “Well played, Mayans.”
